Losing gets old. This shit gets old really realy quick. But the fact of the matter is that we're losing to teams that are flat out better than us. Maybe that should make it easier to take, but really it doesn't. I have to keep reminding myself that this year was a rebuilding year. I predicted 8-4 to start, and I'm still sticking with that. Losing just plain sucks. So let's break down the suckitude as best we can and move one.
Before I get going, kudos to Ole Miss. They have one helluva team.
Offense
I've said it before but the SC game is not a good benchmark for our team. Nor is it a good benchmark for Kenny. He's not Kenny Trill, he's Kenny Hill, the first year starter/true sophomore. And that's ok. The 2014 iteration of Kenny Hill is not the answer to the offense's issues--what with poorly thrown balls--but that's ok. He is who he is. I firmly believe that the QB position is rightfully still up for grabs in 2015.
Only other group I really feel like calling out is the OL. Texas A&M has had a dominant OL for the past what four or so years and therefore any OL that A&M field should be good. That's not the case. Our interior OL struggles and our tackles can be inconsistent. This feedback is coming from playing against the two best DLs we'll see all season, but the reality is that the OL is good, but not great. And we need to be great to accomplish our goals.
Last but certainly not least is play calling. We dont have a cheat code anymore. Go downfield. Do something different other than WR screens and short passes. Even if you don't think it will work, try it anyways. What we are doing is not working.
Defense
I don't know, man. You tell me. We gave up 21 in the first half, and held them fairly well in the second. Sure our defense could have performed better but we are spoiled in our paradigm that only giving up 21 points offensively (not counting turnovers) should put us in position to win the game (again, I'm used to a cheat code). But it's not. And I don't know what to think about our defense. Should we be able to rely on our defense every once in a while to win a game for us?
Lastly, we need LBs. Lord help us do we need LBs. We are 2 elite LBs away from having a reasonable defense. Our LBs need work. What do you think of Mark Hagen?
Final Thoughts
It's late and honestly post game writeups suck after a loss. The season doesn't get any easier, and we desperately need a bye but somehow we have to pull it together to beat the evil Saban next weekend. Hope for the best.
