Another game, another lackluster performance by the Aggies. This one was a win, though. Here are three thoughts from the game.

After a four game stretch that included three losses and just 21.75 points per game for the Aggies, a much-needed "break" appeared on the schedule in the form of FCS opponent Western Carolina. It was supposed to be a comfortable win in which A&M dominated from start to finish and got things feeling good again. Instead, the Aggies found themselves tied at 14 midway through the second quarter and didn't really pull away until the late third quarter.

That said, let's go for one positive, one negative, and one question.

Positive: Kyler Murray got much-needed reps and Kyle Allen showed positive signs.

This is the part that has Aggie fans talking the most this week. Kyler Murray was hit and miss, although I maintain that he played much better than the average Aggie is giving him credit for. He started the game with an awful interception but after that was much better, leading several good drives and making some good throws.

He was also playing without two of his four starting wide receivers, a fact that seems to be overlooked by many fans who were underwhelmed with Murray's numbers.

Overall, he made a handful of big mistakes and could have thrown a couple more interceptions if the defense had caught them. There's no denying that he needs to eliminate those errors if he is on the field for the next couple weeks. But the good news is that he got the reps, he got the win, and he has things on film that he can learn from.

The other good news is that Kyle Allen made his return, and in his limited action looked very good. Through five games, he was the best quarterback in the SEC this year. The struggles that followed have been well documented, but if he is healthy again, he is capable of beating any team, in my opinion.

Allen looked decisive, comfortable, and threw the ball well enough to certainly appear healthy. I expect that we won't know who will start this week's game until Friday, but I'm going with the glass half full view on the quarterback situation.

Negative: the team was sloppy overall and took too long to pull away.

This is hard to quantify, but everyone who watched the game seemed to agree: it was frustrating and the Aggies just didn't look like a good team.

As usual, A&M did some good things but also seemed to be just a little off with finishing drives and executing. On the third drive of the game, Murray threw a perfect pass to Tra Carson that would have either been a touchdown or a 1st and Goal, but Carson dropped it. A&M then missed a field goal.

Later, Murray threw a perfect pass to Jeremy Tabuyo but Tabuyo slowed up and then wasn't able to make the play, which would have been a 20+ yard gain. Another drive saw A&M settle for a field goal because on 3rd and 1, the Aggies ran play action but didn't block anyone and Murray was sacked.

Other times, Murray missed receivers or just made bad reads.

Defensively, while the Aggies certainly did some good things, allowing Western Carolina to go 82 yards in two plays for a touchdown was frustrating. Fumbling the ensuing kickoff and seeing WCU scoop and score for 14 points in nine seconds was downright maddening.

The Aggies still seem to be playing in a bit of a funk. The simple fact is this: A&M must execute better, both offensively and defensively, if they expect to beat Vanderbilt.

Question: How will the quarterbacks be managed going forward?

Kevin Sumlin now has to decide where to go from here. Did Murray do enough, despite the mistakes, to earn the start against Vanderbilt? Or is Kyle Allen healthy and back in position to close out the year as the starter? Murray wasn't benched for poor play Saturday, to be clear. Sumlin said after the game that they had wanted to get Allen a full quarter of action.

Based on Sumlin's comments the last few weeks, he will likely declare that this week will be an open competition and that whoever practices better will play. But will Sumlin prefer to let them split reps and compete or to declare a starter early in the week so that one can get first team reps and really hammer down the game plan?

Allen still only has about 12 career starts, and Murray has three. The "veteran" here is still just a true sophomore who hasn't had real reps against an FBS defense in three weeks. Murray, on the other hand, is coming off of three straight starts but obviously lacks experience and if he starts, you have to understand that there will be rough spots

Handling this decision for the next couple weeks is critical in giving A&M its best chance to win. Believe it or not, there's a very real scenario in which A&M would finish the season in second place (tied) in the SEC West if they can win these last two games.

look at all those numbers

Howdy, friends. The Ags got the <strike>big</strike> win last night and we're sure everyone feels really great about it. Let's take a quick dive into some of the stats, but don't pay them too much mind because they might not tell us much about next week.

1. Justin Dunning got his first interception last night, and it was the defense's only forced turnover. He was starting in place of Justin Evans, who was not in pads.

2. Those interceptions by Kyler. Cannot have those. Nice tackle, though.

3. Passing TDs by Kyler. Better!

4. Total passing touchdowns. LOOK AT THIS AIR RAID.

5. Total offensive touchdowns. That's like a whole October! WE'RE UNSTOPPABLE NOW

6. Sorry got carried away; here's your reminder that WCU got six free points on a fumbled kickoff return that was returned for a touchdown in a play so cringe-inducing you tried unsuccessfully to forget about it. Christian Kirk will be strongly encouraged by his coaches and teammates to do better at protecting the ball. He finally made a freshman mistake.

7. Combined tackles by Henderson and Mack, with 3 TFL and one sack between them. The defensive tackles should dominate against an opponent like this, so it was good to see our two biggest guys get good production within a pretty heavy rotation.

8. Tackles by Armani Watts. That's 96 on the year, nearly 40 ahead of the second-leading tackler.

9. Number of players with a reception. Two starting wide receivers were out but we still saw more distribution than normal, which seems to be one of the keys to this thing working properly.

10. Tackles for loss by the defense, including a pair of sacks.

18. Totes for Dolezal. He got 84 solid yards on senior night and carried the load in the second half.

50+. Here is an interesting one: with his 52-yarder last night, Taylor Bertolet has more field goals from over 50 yards than any other kicker in the country. He's 5/8 on the year from long range and added another 47-yarder last night.

100% KYLE ALLEN. He came into the game and went a perfect six for six with a touchdown pass to Christian Kirk and helped fan the nearly-extinguished embers in the ashes of our hopes for the offense so surely there will not be any sort of QB controversy now right nope it will all be fine now the problem has been solved let's move on, nothing wrong with the offense anymore at all nope

109. Yards for Tra Carson in the first half. He didn't play in the second for whatever reason.

198. All-purpose yards for Kirk. He stepped up with 122 receiving yards with Reynolds and Speedy out

302: Total offense for Western Carolina. It seemed like more somehow. It was a deceptive sort of game in which the drastic mistakes seemed amplified due to the opponent.

583: Total offense for Texas A&M. Was this a slump-buster? We'll find out next week against a pretty salty Commodore defense.

In summary: wins are cool and all, but it didn't really tell us much. It looks like we might just limp across the finish line again this year, but it also feels like one of Sumlin's big surprise performances is right around the corner. Maybe. Hopefully? We've got two more SEC games left to enjoy. Or at least watch.

STAT WATCH: Tra Carson went over the century mark again last night, and he now needs 136 yards to break 1,000 on the year. No Aggie running back has broken a thousand since the move to the SEC, but our last two conference foes field some really solid defenses. Getting his numbers would be a huge boost for the run game and the offense as a whole to close out the season.

Weird game.

The game started off on a negative note with the suspension of Josh Reynolds and Speedy Noil for unspecified rules violation. An already-struggling offense was held back further by the loss of two of Kyler's favorite receivers. This also brings to light an ugly secret about A&Ms WR corps: we really only have 4 good WRs right now. But I thought the backups: Tabuyo, Pope, and even Ratley played fairly well tonight

Aside from a nine-second spell in the second quarter where we gave up 14 points this game went more or less as it should have gone.

Kyler isn't really ready. He didn't have a bad game but he didn't have a great one. He's just not ready to be a star and in order for this offense to really hum like it should the QB needs to have an excellent game. I'm not sure if Kyler is capable of having an excellent game at this point. He's capable of being "good enough" but in our offensive scheme "good enough" leads to a loss. I guess the million dollar question right now is whether he's better than a healthy Kyle. I think the answer there is no. But I'm not sure how fair it is to expect that after only his third start.

And is Kyle Allen healthy? He didn't look bad on that drive in the fourth--two good passes leading to a quick score. He moved the offense well. He looked more comfortable than Kyler does. WHO THE HELL STARTS AGAINST VANDY?! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH OUR QBS?

Aside from that flukey 65 yard rush, the defense played as well as anyone could expect. Perimeter run defense continues to be a bit of a concern but Western Carolina wasn't good enough to make our shortcomings really bite us.

If we play this way next week it's gonna be tough for us to win. We did what we had to do tonight but I don't know why we seem to trend downward at the end of the year. Maybe it's our freshmen hitting a wall. Maybe it's that our offense is predictable and once folks figure us out then it's over. I don't know man. I don't know.

There's nothing predictable about Aggie football (except our offense [BADUM-CHING]) right now. The roster is full of incredible athletes but then it never seems like we're able to get any synergy between players and coaches-mainly on offense.

The opponent wasn't a particularly sexy one but a malaise-filled, confusing showing didn't help anyone. Just a boring game tonight. But it's a win by 24 so I'll take it.

BTHO vandy.

It’s just a game played by college students that I only watch for entertainment. The "entertainment" comes from watching two teams battle it out while their coaches determine different strategies for these finely tuned athletes. I always cheer for the Aggies. They're from Texas A&M and I have a degree from there, so I'm most familiar with their traditions. If you went to another school, I bet you cheer for them. You probably think they're the best, but I respectfully disagree with your views on fandom. Look how civil we are.
After a small break I am happy to be back and serving piping hot links for your consumption. In my absence I have watched zero Aggie football and assume that everything has gone great no that's OK I don't need a game recap I'm perfectly confident in my team no please go away just stop talking it's fine.

VOTE FOR #GBHTAILGATE Watch this pretty slick video about the GBH IRL Tailgate and then vote for the awesomest tailgate there is so that we can continue to convince cuppycup to set up a literal free-for-all that will eventually be the subject of a docudrama about the excesses of American culture and their role in the downfall of human society. It also may be used as 'Exhibit B' in your upcoming drunk and disorderly trial.

STOP INVENTING STATES (I'M LOOKING AT YOU BALL STATE) Don't know anything about our upcoming opponents at WCU? Nobody does! Actually that's not true because Spadilly has gone and researched them up for ya. Turns out that Catamount fans travel in packs, fear fire, and have their horns harvested for religious and magical ceremonies.

YOUR SOFT PUNCHES HURT EVEN MORE, COACH Hatin' Ass Spurrier visited yesterday, and he barely had it in him to land a light jab on an already worked-over Aggie team:

Kevin Sumlin works for an ag school, so I guess an offense that keeps getting picked is just part of the curriculum.

It's like the asshole in your platoon being super nice to you because he can see that you've been shot full of holes and the medic isn't giving you anything but more morphine.

POLL QUESTION:

What do you call this animal?
