The Aggies moved the ball at times but couldn't stop shooting themselves in the foot.

In what has become commonplace for the Texas A&M offense lately, the Aggies had another frustrating day Saturday, managing just 10 points against an Auburn defense that was not exactly dominant prior to visiting Kyle Field. Here's what I saw.

For the most part, Auburn couldn't stop A&M. A&M stopped themselves.

Here's what I mean by that. First of all, looking at Kyler Murray's drives, A&M had a very high success rate. 56% overall (A&M's two best games in this category have come in Kyler Murray's two starts).

On A&M's first drive, the Aggies moved right down the field. What stopped the drive? A dropped pass on third down. A perfectly placed throw by Kyler Murray hit Ricky Seals-Jones right in the face and then fell incomplete. So instead of first down in the red zone, A&M settled for a long field goal.

On the next drive, A&M again drove right down the field and again entered the red zone on a nice 16 yard completion to Josh Reynolds... but it was wiped out because of an ineligible man downfield penalty on A&M. Two plays later, Kyler Murray made the right call and threw the ball to Damion Ratley in single coverage, and Ratley failed to win the battle as the pass was ultimately wrestled away from him and intercepted. To be clear, that was a proper read and throw by Murray. NFL quarterbacks throw passes like that every single week and the expectation is that the receiver either catches it or it falls incomplete.

Next drive? A&M again drives right down the field, getting all the way to the Auburn nine yard line before Kyler Murray again threw an interception at the goal line, this time his fault. Every quarterback who has played has made bad decisions like that, and it's unfortunate, but now we're three for three on drives where A&M moved the ball but made drive-killing errors.

On the next drive, a three and out, credit the Auburn defense.

On the next drive though, A&M again moves the ball right down the field, getting to a 2nd and 1 at the Auburn 23 before getting stuffed for no gain on three straight runs, each of a different variety. Four out of five drives either entered the Auburn red zone or got close but failed due to execution errors (or an inability to gain one yard). Three total points scored out of all that offensive movement.

The offense opened the third quarter by seeing another interception thrown by Murray, this time when trying to force the ball into a covered receiver on third down, but then on the next drive, again Auburn couldn't stop A&M, and the Aggies drove 83 yards and scored a touchdown. Murray got hurt on that drive and didn't return.

So the failure here by the A&M offense wasn't one of complete ineptitude. It was an inability to finish drives. And it was a combination of things. Receivers, offensive linemen, the quarterback... they all were at fault at different times.

Despite moving the ball, A&M failed to test Auburn's defense.

Yes, A&M had some success, but they didn't bother to even try certain things, and I can't understand why. Here are three examples:

Quarterback draws

The Aggies ran four QB draws against South Carolina, with success on three of them and an 11.75 yards per carry average. Yet they didn't do it a single time versus Auburn. The Aggies typically run the play out of an empty backfield formation, and they did go empty eight times Saturday, but never forced Auburn to defend the run from that formation.

The quad formation

I wrote about this in the scouting article last week. Against South Carolina, A&M sent Tra Carson in motion out of the backfield to become a fourth wide receiver on one side of the formation. Six times A&M ran that look, and five times they were successful. It clearly stressed the South Carolina defense and forced them to make alignment decisions that A&M was able to exploit.

Yet A&M didn't do it a single time Saturday. Why? Why not at least throw that look at them a couple times and just check to see if they are vulnerable to it? If easy yards can be had, take them. Formations like that are a good example of forcing the defense to react to you, rather than the other way around. Force their hand. Make them prove they can stop it.

Bubble screens

Some fans hate the bubble screen because of some bad memories from last year, but here's the thing. A&M could have lined up in trips formation and thrown bubble screens against Auburn all night long and gained 8 yards per play doing it. Auburn's alignment consistently put only two defenders over A&M's three receivers when in trips formation, yet A&M didn't bother exploiting it until the second half.

On A&M's lone touchdown drive (in the third quarter), it was like they suddenly realized Auburn was offering free yards, and A&M ran literally all 14 plays that drive from trips formation, and all they did the entire drive was package zone reads with either bubble screens or the stick concept (inside receiver run a 5 yard stop, #2 receiver run a quick out, and outside receiver go long). Both the bubble and the stick were available due to Auburn's alignment, and both (along with the run game) were used successfully multiple times on that drive. Lo and behold, A&M drove right down the field and scored a touchdown and all the quarterback had to do was make short throws he could make in his sleep. A&M was successful on 11/14 plays on the drive, and two of the unsuccessful plays were first down plays where A&M gained four and three yards, respectively. So, semi-successful still.

The point of plays like the bubble screen is to take them if the defense is clearly giving them up. Do it until it forces the defense to adjust. A&M's failure to take the easy yards and dictate the game that way really hurt them. See, A&M did still move the ball a lot, as I detailed above, but they did it the hard way. Kyler Murray had to make some really tight throws, some of which he made, but some of which ended as turnovers.

If a team lines up defensively with an obvious weakness, you must attack that first. Go straight for it until they change. If they have too few defenders in the box, run the ball every time. If they only have two over three to the outside, go right at that. Once you show that you will exploit those things, it forces a defense to change their alignment. That's when an offense is then dictating how the defense plays, and that's when the offense can then continue attacking the inherent weakness in a defense.

Kyler Murray affects the defense.

This is not a knock on Kyle Allen. It's just a recognition of what we all know to be true about a dynamic runner at the quarterback position. Since Kyler Murray took over the starting job, his running ability has really opened things up for Tra Carson.

Carson has eclipsed 100 yards in both games with Murray starting, and has been over five yards per carry in both. Carson had not had a single game of 5 ypc against a Power 5 opponent so far this year and was averaging just 3.6 ypc in such games, but has averaged 5.5 in the last two.

Certainly, playing weaker run defenses has helped. It's hard to quantify, but some of the running room has to be attributed to defenses worrying about Murray.

Another great stat: in the last two games, only one running play has been tackled behind the line of scrimmage. How else has that benefited the team? Thanks to an efficient running game that keeps moving forward, the Aggies were rarely in third and long. With Murray playing, A&M ran 13 snaps on third down, and 11 of them were needing four or fewer yards.

The season is almost over, sadly, but if you're an eternal optimist like me, there's still hope for a ten win season. Whether or not A&M can get there will depend on if they can execute better, plan better, and protect the ball.

A recap of the press conferences held by Texas A&M coaches and players as they come off a loss to the Auburn Tigers

Texas A&M came into the game against Auburn as a 7 point favorite but was outscored 26-10, giving them their third loss in four weeks. The offense struggled yet again, turning the ball over three times and scoring only one offensive touchdown in the game.

Members of the media met with Texas A&M coaches and players to discuss what went wrong during the Auburn game, how the offense will fix the mistakes that have been persistent throughout the season, and the expectations for the team moving forward.

Kevin Sumlin on the issues with the offense

"It's a combination of a lot of things. You have a couple young guys that have not had a lot of experience playing quarterback, but last week I thought the big story of the whole game was we lost the turnover battle 3 to 0 and two of those were in the end zone. We moved the football fairly well in our rushing attack, third quarter we came out in a closer game, then when we got behind we weren't really able to execute that because we took a long time to score in that third quarter and we ran out of time and it forced us into a different football game.

You can't lose the turnover battle 3 to 0 and give up over 300 yards rushing and expect to win a division game. Like most teams in America, when we limit turnovers and penalties, we've won. When we haven't, we have not won. Turnover ratio becomes a complete team statistic as we talk about every week. That's the first game in a while where we didn't get a turnover on defense, then we turn it over twice going in to score."

Jake Spavital on the issues with the offense

"One of the main things is we just have to finish. Against Auburn we moved the ball efficiently but we didn't finish. In this league you don't know how many opportunities you're going to get. You have nine solid drives to go out there and move the ball and we just didn't capitalize on punching it in the end zone."

Kevin Sumlin on the QB situation

"I can tell you this, we're going to evaluate Kyler because you all know he left the game Saturday night. Without being specific about injuries, which we never are, yesterday was more of a mental day with installation, game plan, we get back into pads today. We'll see where he is physically and where his status is throughout the week.

As I've said before, I sit here every week and tell people the truth and people try to make up their own story, Kyle and Jake need to prepare this week just like they do every week. ... So the pecking order will be based then just like it always has been, on practice.

So we'll see where Kyler is from a physical standpoint. He needs to practice because he needs the reps. If he's ready to go, he'll be the starter. If not, we'll make a decision later in the week. All that will come later in the week."

Jake Spavital on the backup QB situation

"Like it is every week, we do it with every position, you put them out there during the week in practice and whoever does best is going to be the guy that goes in. That's not just for the quarterback position, that's for all positions."

Jake Spavital on Kyle Allen during the QB transition

"He's been incredible. When we're in the quarterback room as a unit he's in Kyler's ear saying, 'Here's what I saw, here's how I handled it.' It's impressive for a kid to be in a situation like that and handle it with such class."

Kevin Sumlin on the seniors preparing for their last home game

"It goes real fast. In the meeting yesterday we talked as a team: nobody cares more than seniors, because for a lot of these guys they're guaranteed 180 minutes more of football. There'll be a bowl game and they don't know what's going to happen with that, but for most of them it'll be the last time they play organized football in their life. So their sense of urgency is always, no matter how much you preach it, better than a younger guy.

You look at this class of guys, this is the first class to go through SEC football (for all four years). They're a transitional class and they're very proud of what they're doing and how they're doing it. It'll be like most senior nights but it'll be particularly emotional for a lot of reasons, and it should, because of the special moments they've had at Texas A&M and that they're still fighting to achieve."

John Chavis on short-term fixes at linebacker

"I'm going to shock you just a little bit, ok? We actually made some improvement there in this last game. Without calling a name, you take a guy that had been playing at 45 percent and he's up to 65 percent. But 65 percent gets you beat. We've got to keep growing.

Richard Moore has been a plus force, every time he's on the field he's making plays. He's a guy that's got to get more involved in our defense."

John Chavis on the defense's struggles

"It's not a matter of learning, it's a matter of guys working together. We're letting plays get away from us that shouldn't, and that's been a thing that has continued and it's a thing that, I won't get frustrated, but we've got to get fixed. It's got to be a sense of urgency.

Our guys want to do well. They want to play well. I don't think it's a matter of learning the defense, it's a matter of reacting to plays in very quick situations. Offenses move fast and you've got to react quickly."

After encouraging signs a week ago versus South Carolina, it was back to the losing column for the Aggies on Saturday. What did the game tell us?

In an incredibly frustrating performance, Texas A&M was defeated by Auburn 26-10 at home on Saturday night. The loss was as ugly as the weather. When the best moment of the night was 100,000 people holding cardboard over their faces, you know it's not a good sign for the football team. What did the game tell us?

The Aggie offense is in complete disarray.

The struggles versus Alabama and Ole Miss have been well documented. However, when the Aggies named Kyler Murray their starter and played an efficient, mistake-free game offensively against the Gamecocks, it really felt (at least to me) like the start of something new. It seemed like the A&M coaching staff had a clear vision for how to use Murray and it seemed like a new course had been charted and big things were ahead.

And maybe big things are still ahead... but last night was a baffling failure offensively. And I'm not putting that on Kyler Murray. It seemed like there was no real plan in place to take advantage of Murray's skill set.

For example, last week, A&M ran a handful of quarterback draws, along with a few speed options, plus used a 4x1 formation (three receivers plus the running back all to one side, one receiver to the other side) six times and had great success on all of it.

Last night, however, I saw zero quarterback draws, only one or two speed options, and not once did A&M line up in that 4x1 formation that was so dynamic versus South Carolina. Why would you not do it a single time? Why would you not run a single quarterback draw? A&M went with five wide receivers several times against Auburn, and some draws would have likely forced Auburn to bring another defender in closer to the box which would have likely opened up some more passing lanes.

Furthermore, it felt like there was almost some sort of edict for Kyler Murray not to run. He rarely kept the ball on zone read plays and very rarely scrambled. It really seemed like the game plan almost intentionally ignored the things that make Kyler Murray so dynamic.

One more example: since Murray took over last week, A&M has brought back the bubble screen. They ran it a couple times and also successfully faked it a couple times against South Carolina. In the Auburn game however, the bubble was available several times but A&M didn't choose to run it. Based on Auburn's alignment, A&M should have taken those free yards until Auburn adjusted to it, and then that's when the offense should exploit the defense's adjustment.

A&M's failure to take advantage of the skills of their players and the inexplicable decision to avoid running the plays that Kyler Murray ran well last week was a killer.

Aggie fans are getting impatient.

The fans showed up despite the cold and wet conditions and were into the game from the start. The football team has a great amount of support. But the patience of the fan base is wearing thin.

Even with just a two-possession deficit and A&M driving on the Auburn side of the field, the stands had almost completely emptied. It seemed that most fans were fed up with what seems to be a rudderless ship at the moment (cold, rainy weather didn't help).

Kevin Sumlin has enjoyed a wonderful reputation with his fans at A&M. There were good memories of him from his short stint as an assistant in 2002, and when he (along with Johnny Manziel, of course) immediately brought success and an undeniable sense of cool to Aggieland in 2012, it seemed he could do no wrong.

The mid-season swoon of 2014 caused some fans to question some aspects of the Sumlin program. But most seemed quick to forgive, assuming that it was a learning experience and the same type of thing wouldn't happen again.

But here we are. It has happened again. And judging by reactions from a pretty broad spectrum of fans I've spoken to along with message board posts and chatter that I heard in the stadium Saturday night, the general mood of the fan base is pretty angry.

The Aggies don't do any one thing well enough to lean on.

One of the greatest movies of all time, The Three Amigos, has a great scene where the Amigos talk to the townspeople of Santo Poco to find out what it is that they as a community do really, really well. They are looking for something specific that they can use to come together and defeat El Guapo and his men.

At one point, Ned Nederlander says to the people, "This is not a town of weaklings! You can use your strengths against El Guapo. Now, what is it that this town really does well?"

And everyone kind of says "hmm...." and there's a long pause before someone finally yells out, "We can sew!" And while they're initially disappointed that sewing seems kind of worthless, they end up using that skill to defeat El Guapo. (I'm just going to assume you've all seen the movie, and if you haven't, please stop reading this and just go watch it already or at least watch this clip.)

So, if Ned Nederlander were to ask the A&M football team that question, what would the answer be? The Aggies don't run the ball well enough to control the game that way (although maybe they could if they actually used Kyler Murray's running ability the way they did against South Carolina). They don't pass the ball well enough, for a variety of reasons. Defensively, you could say that A&M can rush the passer as well as anyone, but that skill only becomes relevant if you can stop the run and force your opponent into obvious passing downs (nope) or if your offense has given you a lead which causes the opponent to pass the ball (nope).

It's up to the coaches to figure out what A&M can do really well and how to make those things show up in the game. It's not happening right now.

There weren't enough numbers.

As Saturday night unfolded, it gradually became painfully clear that without dynamic performances by dynamic players, this team will struggle immensely to even find an identity, much less win any individual battles, pick up yards, or make stops when needed most. Where were our playmakers?

Defense

The defense got punched in the teeth early, but unlike past performances was unable to adjust properly. Auburn was running at will.

0. Forced turnovers. We have only won the SEC games in which we've won the turnover battle, and with the offense spotting the Tigers two very early picks, the defense couldn't even chip away at the deficit.

0. Sacks. Auburn was 13-17 passing. We managed one QB hurry.

3. Tackles by Myles Garrett. You probably don't remember hearing his name being called much.

5. Tackles for loss. The team was averaging over nine per game heading into Saturday.

13. Tackles by Armani Watts. Again: it's nice that the safeties are able to make tackles but against a power run team is less than ideal.

311. Rushing yards. The Tigers averaged 6.0 yards per carry.

Overall: BAD. But not the worst. They did hold Auburn to four field goals in the second half after giving up touchdowns on the first two possessions. They were doing just enough to give the offense a long shot at getting back in the game.

Offense

What is going on? Something is rotten straight down to the core, and all of these tweaks and changeups have not been able to mask what is ultimately an inconsistent and often ineffective machine. Leave aside the fact that our expectations were enormously skewed by Johnny Manziel's two years, we should still expect in 2015 to gain as many yards as Kentucky did against that Auburn defense. We didn't even come close.

303. Total offense. Kentucky had 497 against Auburn. Jacksonville State had 438. San Jose State had 406. We made Brent Musberger utter the phrase "Will Muschamp is delighted" which was the perfectly grotesque audio accompaniment to that offensive performance.

0-2 Fourth downs. We can't get tough short yardage when it's needed the most.

3. Interceptions. Two of them inside the five yard-line and end zone. On the second and third drives of the game. Crushing.

3. Catches by Josh Reynolds. Long reception of nine yards. He did break a school record for touchdowns last year, in case anyone forgot.

4. Receivers with a catch. Not exactly spreading the ball around.

5. Carries by James White. For 11 yards. It's good that he's able to spell Tra occasionally, but that kind of drop-off in production hurts.

So what will happen? We'll come out against Western Carolina with a different gameplan and make ourselves feel better. Someone will have a huge game and hope will start building up again. But we'll find out a lot more about our offense against Vanderbilt, who has a very good defense. Unless this team can somehow find an identity in the next three weeks and stun LSU in Death Valley, this season is somehow going to feel like another disappointment after the quick start.

This was not a good night for Kevin Sumlin

We've got some serious issues. Serious serious issues right now.

Kudos to Auburn. They schemed well for us. They knew our edge defense was bad, so they gashed us there early. Then when we got that covered, they gashed us in the middle. Regardless, offensively they schemed to take advantage of every single weakness that we had. They got us back for last year.

i dont even know where to start. Let's just break this down.

Defense

We gave up damn near 300 yards on the ground to a team that is not that great at running the ball. Our linebackers still struggle with their run fits and are consistently out of position. The talent level is certainly lacking there, but man. When you're giving up that many yards it's not just talent anymore. But then again after giving up 14 points in the first half to two quick TDs, the defense played well enough...key words "well enough" to hold Auburn to 4 field goals in the second half. Given how much we were getting gashed and how many big plays we were giving up, that's not terrible. 26 points should be enough to put us in position to win. That should have been good enough.

But make no mistake, the defense did not have a good day at all. They just weren't the main issue here.

Offense

How many games this year has our offense been stagnant? It's so tiresome to write this line: Jake Spavital relies on out-tallenting other teams. If the other team has equal to or greater talent to ours then we're going to lose. There is no synergy between offensive play calling and talent and that's squarely on the play caller. Our play calling is predictable, unimaginative and just plain dumb at times.

Kyler had a bad day. I can absolve him of responsibility for the first pick because Ratley needed to have that. But the other two were a true freshman trying too hard to make a play. He's not 100% ready to be the starter here, but we dont have much of a choice because Allen is injured and Hubenak is not good enough.

But sadly the QB coach isn't good enough to get him ready to play week in and week out. Kyler bears some responsibility for his play tonight, but the playcalling and scheme did absolutely nothing to put him in position to be successful. This game combined with Ole Miss should be enough to cause changes.

Kevin Sumlin

Sumlin wants to be a CEO head coach. He wants to hire good people and let them do their job while he manages the bigger picture as far as the program goes.

But in order to do that he has to manage his personnel well. Jake Spavital is not meeting our standards and hasn't been for quite some time. Spavital's own incompetency is on him, but his incompetency as it is continuously impacting the team is on Kevin Sumlin.

Kevin Sumlin is paid too well for this. This season will end up as fool's gold...we're at 6 wins right now and it's likely that we get at least two more (although Vandy is no gimme). We'll go to some middle tier bowl and probably win because we're good with time to prepare and end up with an 8-9 win season which is better than what we had last year. But that 8-9 win season means nothing...absolutely nothing when you lose to Alabama, Ole Miss, and Auburn and maybe (ok probably) LSU. At what point do we rise above that 4th spot in the west? How are we defining "good enough"?

A different play caller gets us more wins this year. I have no doubt about that. But I'm so damn tired of that line of thought. A different defensive coordinator gets us more wins last year--but who's fault is it that Snyder stuck around after that abysmal 2013 season?

Kevin Sumlin will be our football coach next year. That is without question. But whatever good will he had with our decision makers might be gone after tonight. We're reaching a win-or-go-home watershed moment for his tenure as A&M football coach.

Final Thoughts

This was the worst loss in Sumlin's tenure. You can point to 59-0 and a few others but at least then we were losing to teams that were better than us. This team has more talent than Auburn .We had no business losing this game in the manner that we did. No other way to spin this...tonight was a bad night for our Aggie football program.

AVENGE THE HORSECOLLAR

The last time Auburn came to College Station, they outlasted the Ags in another one of their #blessed finishes, getting away with a blatant and shamefully uncalled penalty that would eventually help them wrap up a spot in the national championship game. Well, look who's back to watch the 2015 team exact their revenge. We've got actual night football at Kyle Field, it's November, and we're ranked. Life is good. Enjoy the football.
