Texas A&M used their home opener to work on a few new things, including the triumphant return of the traditional tight end.

Texas A&M defeated Ball State 56-23 Saturday night after jumping out to a 49-3 halftime lead. Being just the second game of the year and a game that A&M expected to win, it provided several chances to try new things and continue building a base of personnel and scheme to work with going forward.

Offense

First things first, a quick review of the overall tone of the game. I charted everything until Kyler Murray left the game. A&M was very successful, particularly on play action passing, and while the Aggies were primarily a "10" personnel (one running back, four wide receivers) team against Arizona State, against Ball State they were in "11" personnel (one running back, one tight end or H-back, three wide receivers) 64% of the time.

As for formations, the Aggies still used their three main formations from week one a majority of the time, but they added three new formations that accounted for almost 25% of their snaps. Here are pictures of each.

Shut sloth (just like the regular sloth formation but it's closed, or shut, with a tight end instead of a wideout):

Shut trips (just like trips but the single side is against closed, or shut, with a tight end instead of a wideout):

This one is interesting because it's done with 11 personnel, and A&M moves Dolezal out into the X position, moves Speedy Noil inside to the #2 receiver position on the left, and meanwhile on the right puts Caden Smith out as the #2 receiver.

The Aggies did also vary the location of their running back in the backfield on their sloth formations, but for simplicity I just considered them all to be the same formation. Here are a few quick pictures of the backfield variations.

As we dig a little deeper into the numbers of how A&M lined up and what kind of plays we ran, you can see that first downs appeared to still be lagging in the effectiveness department, but those numbers are skewed by the two drives charted in the third quarter. In the first half, A&M was over 55% effective on first down, which is great. Second and third down were great too, which is how you score 49 points in a half.

I went ahead and separated Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray's passes out below. Obviously Kyle Allen played great, and the numbers are better than Kyler Murray. That said, Kyler wasn't as far off as the numbers show. He had a 45 yard touchdown pass called back and while he didn't seem quite as crisp as Allen, he looked very comfortable.

The biggest takeaway for me though was seeing how well Kyle Allen threw the ball on play action and/or roll-out passes. I don't recall seeing very much of that from our offense last year, but it seems like it could really be a big weapon throughout the year.

I also chart passes by which position is being targeted. That's a little different from just seeing which player is targeted, as it accounts for substitutions and players moving to different positions, which A&M has done a little of this year. For example, Ricky Seals-Jones is usually the H receiver in our four-wide sets, but all of his catches Saturday came from the Y position, when he remained as the slot receiver while we inserted an H-back into the backfield.

As you can see, our Y position (that is either Christian Kirk in our four wide sets or Kirk/Seals-Jones in our three wide sets) is very dangerous and effective. As the season goes on I'll continue tracking this.

A few other things I noticed from staring at spreadsheets for way too long:

When we run the ball out of 10 personnel, we are much more likely (or were against Ball State) to run to the perimeter.

Ball State only brought 5+ pass rushers one time. On the first drive, they blitzed with six rushers, and Kyle Allen scrambled for a first down. That was the last time. Such a change from ASU.

Kyle Allen had four designed roll-out passes (and as mentioned above, did great on them), while that type of play was only called once for Kyler Murray (and he was pressured and threw it away).

14 of A&M's passes were thrown to the left, while eight went to the right.

A&M ran 11 run/pass option plays that I noticed. The Aggies were very successful on these. The touchdown pass to Josh Reynolds was a run/pass option, and overall there was an 82% success rate, averaging 10.7 yards per play.

Defense

This article usually talks offense but let's have a quick moment of appreciation for Myles Garrett. His name was rarely called Saturday and he only played a small number of snaps due to the score and the opponent, but he still affects the game even when he isn't making the big plays.

Here's an example. On Ball State's first drive, they got down to the one yard line with a long run. It was very close to being a touchdown, but Myles Garrett chased the running back down from behind and kept him short of the end zone. Here is the sequence.

So after a stuff on first down, Ball State attempts to run on second down, and Garrett completely blows up the play, forcing the running back to re-route and get stopped by fellow Aggies. It doesn't show up in the box score, but this was caused by #15.

Kevin Sumlin - Post-Ball State Weekly Press Conference

A recap of the press conferences held by Texas A&M coaches and players as they come off a victory against the Ball State Cardinals at Kyle Field.

Texas A&M's 56-23 rout of the Ball State Cardinals last Saturday contained very few surprises after the opening drives from each team. Ball State's first drive was the only successful one against the Aggie defense in the first half, as RB Darian Green tore off two big runs for 47 and 27 yards to setup their only points, a field goal. The A&M defense corrected their issues afterwards, and pitched an almost perfect game alongside a Kyle Allen led Aggie offense that scored a touchdown on 6/7 drives. Questions from the press this week centered around player rotations, the absence of WR Speedy Noil, and the reaction to the performances of key players during the game.

Speedy Noil

As pointed out earlier this week, the absence of Speedy Noil in weeks 1 and 2 has been noticeable due to the electrifying performances he fielded in 2014. It was speculated that his limited snap count could be due to off-season disciplinary issues, but Texas A&M coaches cleared it up by discussing the injuries Speedy has been dealing with through both Spring and Fall camps.

"[Speedy Noil] has been — out of the 28 practices in fall camp, I bet he practiced six of them. He's been nursing an injury, came into the first game a little bit and practiced more that week of the game. You saw a better version of him last week as he's getting healthier. He's coming along, health-wise, and that's why you saw the preseason SEC first-team or second-team kick returner not back there on the first play of the year. - Kevin Sumlin

"I think he's great. The injuries have nicked him up. He didn't practice much in fall camp, but he also didn't practice much in spring ball. He's still the same old Speedy, we've just got to get him healthy and keep him coming along because he's a special talent ... still very explosive, we've just got to get him more reps and get him playing at a higher level." - Jake Spavital

Christian Kirk has proven himself to be as deadly of a kick returner as Speedy was in 2014, and as Head Coach Kevin Sumlin pointed out today, the plan is to put both "Thing 2 and Thing 3," as he called them, in as kick returners going forward.

Defense

After Ball State was able to rip two big runs off of the Aggie defense on the first drive, the squad adjusted to make a goal line stand from the 1 yard line and shut out the Cardinals for the remainder of the half. Defensive Coordinator John Chavis attributes the defense's confidence to regroup and adjust to positive-reinforcement coaching:

"I've said this before - you put young men in situations where they can have success. You give them the tools and put them in situations where they can have success, when they have success they get confident.

You have to be positive. Coaching can be a negative thing, but you have to make sure you're not beating kids down. You hold them accountable, but we don't beat them down. They're somebody's son, they're our football players, and we have to treat them that way. Have high expectations, show them how to get it done, and they'll get it done for you." - John Chavis

The defense gained some much needed depth with the return of LB Otara Alaka to the rotation. That depth will continue to build as DTs Julien Obioha and Zaycoven Henderson, as well as LB A.J. Hilliard, make their way back into playing time this week. Coach Sumlin states that "A.J. is back and we'll wait and see on Zaycoven," regarding their current standing with the team after being suspended for the first two games of the season.

Brandon Williams, making the transition from RB to DB this season, has "made [A&M] a better secondary already," according to John Chavis. Offensive Coordinator Jake Spavital's statements today made it clear that Williams' defensive reps are more important than those at RB, and intimated that he will only be used at RB in emergency situations - sharing third-string duties with RBs Brice Dolezal and Kwame Etwi. Williams is still a bit rough around the edges at the DB position, but Coach Chavis believes his system allows DBs like Williams and De'Vante Harris to play the position without the burden of developing too many techniques:

"Even though we have a package that is multiple, we keep the technique the same. If you can master five techniques in the passing game, you'll play well. We won't ask you to play 15, 20 techniques. They're going to line up confident and put their cleats in the ground and be able to play football." - John Chavis

Offense

"We're still trying to figure out who we are offensively," said Coach Spavital regarding the changes and improvements on offense from week 1 to week 2. While the game against Ball State showed improvements in both offensive line and running back play, "I was not pleased with the amount of times we put the ball on the ground," said Coach Sumlin about the number of times the ball hit the turf on Saturday. At this point, the team's biggest need is consistency, and it's best source for it on Saturday was 2nd year QB Kyle Allen.

"I thought he played great. I believe we gave him seven drives and he scored on six of them. He looks very comfortable back in the pocket and he's composed. He's playing very well right now. He's making good checks and playing very smart right now. Very comfortable with where he's at right now." - Jake Spavital

The Aggie coaches have hinted at the possibility of playing multiple QBs in games this year, with QB Kyler Murray rotating in for Allen, but Saturday's game told a different story. While Murray did get playing time in the blowout win, throwing 9-of-14 for 65 yds and TD, he wouldn't come in for Allen until the final drive of the first half - leading to speculation that the focus was on Allen to get almost all of the meaning reps and minutes with the starters as possible. "From the standpoint of just running the offense, he got better," Coach Spavital said of Murray's performance, "and I'm very pleased with how he's starting to operate the system."

A backup that did make the most out of meaningful minutes on Saturday was RB Brice Dolezal, a walk-on who was put on scholarship last year due to his commitment and on-field performance. Dolezal accumulated 83 yds and TD on 17 carries, carries that Coach Spavital says are a right that he's earned:

"He's earned that right. He does everything right. In the Arizona State game when James got hurt and Tra's helmet popped off and he had to come out, I felt comfortable putting Brice out there because he knows what he's doing. ... It was fun watching him go out there and paly meaningful minutes, and I thought he ran the ball well." - Jake Spavital

Asked about his confidence in the offense, Coach Sumlin gave the room a smirk before stating that his confidence has never wavered:

"What is my confidence level? I'm pretty confident. Are you saying you're not confident? I had confidence in our offense after Game 1, going into Game 1. What we're doing is trying to set a standard for play on both sides. We were not perfect on third down in the first half offensively and not perfect on third down defensively.

We played a lot of people, played two quarterbacks in the first half, Jordan Davis caught a touchdown, we got a lot of people involved. Koda Martin got in at tight end. We were a little more creative than in the first game, played younger guys, got more blocking surfaces. The offense is expanding week by week." - Kevin Sumlin

Polls are scientific and perfect.

The Aggies climbed one spot to #18 in the Coaches' Poll following a thorough and convincing 56-23 win over Ball State last night. However, the Ags also managed to drop one spot somehow in the AP poll, from #16 to #17.

The SEC took a pretty big hit yesterday with Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi State dropping out of the AP Top 25 following losses. Number 6 Auburn plummeted twelve spots to #18 after struggling with FCS Jacksonville State. Ohio State, Alabama, and TCU remained 1-2-3, while Michigan State leapfrogged Baylor for the #4 spot after beating #7 Oregon. USC, Georgia, Notre Dame, Florida State, and UCLA round out the top ten.

A large number of players played a large number of snaps and that is a good thing.

Apart from the initial defensive gaffes that gave up back-to-back runs of 47 and 27 yards to the Cardinals on their first two plays (30% of their total rushing yards), last night's first half was a case study in Taking Care Of Business. Even more so when you look at some other teams around the division [cough] Auburn, Arkansas [/cough]. 49-3 at the half is just what you want when taking on a MAC team that went 5-7 last year.

Twenty points given up in the second half to go along with 240 total rushing yards allowed is far from optimal, but we were getting a lot of personnel into the rotation for some live game experience. Now that we've processed the whole of yesterday, here's a glance at the overall numbers from Kyle Field last night.

0. Interceptions thrown. This is very good, especially since we had four players throwing passes around. The decisions were good and on target. This is always a positive, even against Ball State.

1. Fumble. Kyler let one slip away in the backfield. He's got to hang on to these, but he's the type of player who's always looking to make something happen and it comes with the territory. The flip side is that he's still incredibly inexperienced and there's plenty of time to tighten it up. That's what nights like last night are for in the long run.

2. Third down conversions for BSU on 13 tries. That's 15%. That's for the whole night, and that's really good.

3. Special teams touches for #3 Christian Kirk. He had 91 total return yards (including a 56-yard punt return) to go along with 43 receiving yards and a touchdown. On fire.

4. Different players with a TD reception. Including a [consults football dictionary] "tight end" whatever that may be.

5. Three-and-outs in the first half. Following that first field goal drive, Chavis regrouped his guys and put on a clinic. Ball State's next seven possessions of the first half resulted in five three-and-outs, an interception returned for touchdown, and a three-play, eight-yard drive that ended when the half expired. If one were inclined to don maroon-tinted glasses for this game, one would simply need to focus on the defense's first-half performance.

6. Tackles for loss. This is not as exciting as the fourteen we had against ASU, but as Chuck pointed out, BSU was really committed to a run game that exploited our tendencies. We still managed one QB sack, and that's good enough for double digits on the season total.

7. Tackles by Shaan Washington. We got to see more of our top linebackers play with Alaka back in the lineup, and Washington was covering the field pretty well. He had a TFL and a quarterback hurry as well.

9. Third down conversions on fourteen attempts. That's 64%. That's good! (The Frogurt at the concession stand costs $9 and takes 30 minutes to order. That's bad!)

11. Players with a reception. Includes trick plays where the quarterback and even the tight end caught balls.

39. Total carries for our three running backs, for 258 total yards and a pair of touchdowns. That's pretty good running of the dang ball.

40. Interception return yards for De'Vante Harris on the touchdown. Hopefully this is the first of many defensive scores for the Chavis defense this season. And hopefully that statement won't jinx us.

48. Number of non-starters who got playing time. That includes a healthy number of freshmen and the second-string kicker.

99.3. Tra Carson's QB rating. With Drew Kaser injured, has a new hero emerged to stand guard in our Internet Heisman campaigning?

361. Total yards allowed. Again, that doesn't look very great, especially after holding the Sun Devils under 300. But when you start looking at some of the totals we gave up to weaker competition at home over the last couple of seasons it looks like a pretty good trend. Example: Rice averaged just about 500 yards against us in 2013-2014.

503. Total yards gained. We still managed to sneak over the 500 yard threshold without any real offensive standouts.

104,213. Attendance. Pretty dang good for Ball State.

KYLE ALLEN

There is not a QB controversy. Instead there is a veteran sophomore QB very much coming in to his own, backed up by a freshman phenom who will see his day in the limelight eventually too. Allen went 10 of 13 for 126 yards and 3 TD with 0 picks. He also had a nifty little scamper after a QB throwback play, some fun trickeration that netted him 4th on the team in receiving yards last night.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The best receiver on this team is a freshman. That is just the bee's knees. More importantly, in that same receiver Texas A&M's kick and punt return teams have a weapon like none in recent memory. Christian Kirk has made every punt exciting, and the combination of him and Speedy Noil make kick returns potentially lethal at any moment. You know what? Let's just fully jinx it by pointing out that Taylor Bertolet went a perfect 5/5 tonight on PATs, too.

DON'T WANT NO SCRUBS

The final score is not what we were hoping for, but Kevin Sumlin used the large lead to get extensive time for his 2nd, 3rd, 4th, walk-on, and raffle-winner teams. By the end of the 4th quarter passes were being thrown and caught by total strangers. A touchdown saving defensive play was made by the 12th Man. Sure, the "quality of win" may have taken a slight hit, but with a team this thin it was worth it to get them some game time experience.

Yes, we got a lot of scrub time in. We also let Ball State score more than Arizona State.

BALL SACKS

We got one. They got four. Yes Ball State stuck to a run game designed to expose the gaps available in our defensive scheme, thus minimizing sack opportunities. Still, after manhandling Arizona State this number is more than a little disappointing. Hopefully Nevada will not be so fortunate.

STILL #1 IN OUR HEARTS

After suffering an ankle injury while helping A&M to victory against Arizona State, punter, human, and Heisman candidate Drew Kaser suited up but did not play against Ball State. Why even play the game without your best players on the field? GBH would like to wish our virtuoso punter a swift recovery and a great season. You're my boy, Drew.

Let's take a walk through the renovated digs.

Howdy, y'all. Hope you enjoyed the early games. Auburn showed incredible poise and grit to come back and beat the Gamecocks in overtime. And Arkansas is currently toying with Toledo, courteously allowing them to foster false hopes with a slim 9-7 deficit. A truly proud day for the SEC West.

Meanwhile in Aggieland, questions abound. Will we see both quarterbacks as often as we did last week? Will we see more Speedy? How many sacks will the defensive line rack up? Will Dave South take down the 12-pound Aggie Hot Dog? Settle in and attune yourself to a few hours of live Aggie Football. Be cool to each other and let's enjoy the show.

ALSO: This week we are trying something new after the game. Go ahead and visit this link to check out our live post-game chat where you can submit questions to thacktor, cuppy, Lucas Jackson, and myself, and we'll stumble through them.
