Time for me to try and make sense of the absurd.

Let's get this out of the way. That last call was absolute bullshit. 9/10...hell 99/100 times that gets called as an offsides penalty, but inexplicably this time it didn't. Kyle Allen has done a fantastic job all year long of varying his cadence in an effort to grab those extra 5 yards, and it's worked 99 times....but this was that 100th time. You know, figuratively.

And now we'll get some patronizing press release from the SEC home office about how the refs got it wrong...and somehow that's supposed to make us feel better. But it won't. I feel so unsatisfied right now. Maybe that's not even the right word. I don't know what the right word is. Actually I do know what the right word is.

Very rarely is a game won or lost on one play. There are dozens of other plays that forced us into a position where we needed a 2-minute drive to win the game. The fact that we were in position to win the game at the end is crazy enough given how the game felt at the end of the first half. Let's talk about everything else that came before the call that will be burned into my soul for all eternity.

Offense

In 18 minutes of possession, we ran 48 plays and gained 228 yards. Sure LSU's defense is good and John Chavis is some sort of demon sent specifically to beat A&M, but that's downright pathetic. Our horizontally based offense (bubble screens and runs to the edge) is inept against a good defense, and we never seem to consistently take advantage of our strength which is pushing the ball downfield.

Kyle Allen was 17/27. That's not too bad right? The kid can make throws. He had 2-3 where he was clearly behind the receiver, but once he settled in I thought he played well.

Receivers other than Speedy and Boone need to have a sitdown. Maybe Josh can be excluded from that. Too damn many drops. Too damn many poorly run routes that are just short of the sticks. Too damn many missed blocks.

Tempo. When you take away tempo from this offense, you neuter it. We need to go back to being uptempo. Right now we're just a generic spread offense.

Offense, which is supposed to be the strength of the team, didn't do enough this game. But then again we could have won it. This is hard to type. That damned missed call is weighing on me like a ton of bricks.

Defense

LSU didn't do anything particularly fancy. They didn't do anything they haven't really done all year (aside from the zone read). They didn't do anything they haven't done in the past three years. Sure they did it with man-beasts like Fournette running the ball, but nothing that they did was complex. And we still couldn't stop them. They rushed for 384 yards in this game. THEY RUSHED FOR 384 YARDS IN THIS GAME ALONE. To put that in perspective, Carson is our leading rusher and he has 431 yards on the season.

Not much to say about our defense that hasn't been said before. Well maybe there's this: I'd gladly give my left leg for Will Muschamp to be announced as our defensive coordinator.

Overall

I'm not discontent with Kevin Sumlin's tenure as head coach at A&M. Vegas had us at 7 wins this year. I predicted 8, and we can still get there with a bowl win. I do think that Sumlin has some coaching personnel decisions to make on both sides of the ball this offseason. We know that we'll make changes on the defensive side (and my goodness a lot is riding on that hire), but equally important are the lingering questions of whether Jake Spavital is in over his head as offensive coordinator. I know he's a wunderkind with a strong pedigree, but the play calling this year has been maddeningly off at times.

And the truth of the matter is that without a strong offense, what is our identity? Who are we? That's the key question that Kevin Sumlin needs to answer this offseason moving into 2015. We could point to youth and losing talent as a reason for poor performances this year, but those excuses kind of drop off the table next year.

What a bizarre, unsatisfying, disappointing and terrible game. What a terrible way for our seniors to go out. What an abysmal ending to an already crappy slate of home performances.

Man, that sucked.

Analyzing how the LSU Tigers (7-4, 3-4) stack up against the Fightin’ Texas Aggies (7-4, 3-4) in this week's Stat Simulation...

It's that time of year again, everyone! Bonfire, Turkey, Aggies vs <strike>Longhorns</strike> Tigers; it just can't get any bettter! Both of these teams are <strike>in the Top-25 again</strike> barely bowl eligible and attempting to stay ahead of Arkansas in the standings. The Aggies are excited to have a game back on Turkey Day and the LSU fans, well, aren't.

The LSU Tigers sport a strong defense that ranks Top-15 in the nation. In fact, they are #12 in Total Defense, #6 in Passing Defense, and #2 in Pass Efficiency Defense. They have cultivated this strong air resistance despite ranking 103rd in sacks per game (1.6 per game) - leading one to correctly conclude that their defensive backs carry the load by shutting down opposing wide receivers. The Tiger offense is nothing special, but should remind Aggies of Missouri and Arkansas, that is, a heavy run attack. LSU likes to control the Time of Possession, doesn't give up many turnovers, and is atrocious at passing (thanks to a choice between starting a sophomore or true freshman at quarterback, sound familiar?).

The Aggies still boast the conference's #4 offense, but are well below the expectations that were set by the 2012 and 2013 seasons. This is just another game where all of A&M's strengths (passing, scoring, etc.) are matched evenly with LSU's ability to defend them. Likewise, the Aggies porous defense plays into the strength of LSU's offense - running the ball. I see this game being very similar to Mizzou in that the Aggies could start off strong, match body blows with LSU in the 2nd quarter, exasperate the 12th Man in the 3rd quarter, and be decided by who "wants it more" in the 4th quarter. Hopefully, we worked a little on running Tra Carson in obvious 3rd/4th and short situations near the goalline during the bye week practices.

Before you skip to the analysis, please let me first explain the scope, drawbacks, and purpose of this chart.
Key to the chart below:

Blue Metric = Top 25 in the Nation

Red Metric = Bottom 25 in the nation

Advantage = One team is more than 20 spots ahead of the other team’s inverse metric in the national ranking; i.e. Texas A&M was ranked 68th in Rush Defense versus SMU’s 98th ranked Rushing Offense; therefore, due to A&M being 30 spots ahead of SMU in that metric's national ranking, they get the "advantage".

Disclaimer 1: The prediction formula is an algorithm that I created which takes into account yardage offense and defense, how a team has performed relative to its direct competition, injuries, red zone scoring, home/away/neutral, turnover margin, average points scored and allowed, and a multitude of other factors that are all represented on the above "Foundation of Facts". I have been tweaking the formula for 4 years, but nonetheless I have not found a way to accurately predict the outcome of each game because (as my quote above implies) there are simply TOO many variables to account for and too much uncertainty in each game. However, it is fun to include the objective, stat-based, and numbers-only prediction for a conversation piece. (Besides, if my formula was really that accurate I would horde it to myself and be a multi-millionaire like alternate-Biff in the movie Back to the Future 2)

NOTABLES

LSU's defense allows 4.6 yards per rush; if the Aggies can FINALLY start running the ball (don't hold your breath) we will do significant damage in this game.

The Aggies 3rd down offense and defense have dropped significantly this year. On offense, the Aggies in the past 2 seasons averaged 55% and 50% respectively while in 2014 it's down to 42% (57th). On defense in 2012 & 2013 they allowed 32% and 40% while in 2014 the Aggies are allowing 42% (86th).

The Aggies have 11 takeaways in 11 games. Pathetic. (118th)

The good news is A&M's PR and KR stats are pretty good (so are LSU's). LSU's punt return defense is 101st (allowing 10.7 per punt) - playing into the Aggies favor. Their punter is averaging 45 yards per punt... therefore is he, literally, "Outkicking the coverage"?

Based of the quarter-by-quarter scoring history; LSU and A&M should trade a few leads in the 1st quarter, though A&M could be up 14-10 or so (hopefully). The Aggies score the most and get scored on the most in the 2nd quarter. And in the 3rd quarter, the Farmers just lay down and give up tons of points. They then try to rally in the 4th and come from behind to win the game (or fend off a late comeback from the opponent).

LSU starts a little slow, but then makes seemingly excellent halftime adjustments, and their defense shuts down the opponents in the 3rd and 4th quarters. If you look at the score differential from 1st to 4th quarter for the Tigers it gets progressively better per quarter as the game goes on (14, 22, 47, 52).

Both teams have played opponents with a cumulative record of 75-45; however, the Aggies have the slimmest of margins in the conference only cumulative record, having played teams with a sum 42-35 rather than LSU's 41-38 - probably a negligible difference.

Trey Williams has the best rushing average of all the running backs playing in this game, and also the 2nd fewest carries. If I was Jake Spavital, I would override the RB coach or change whatever rotational system we are using, and basically run the crap out of Trey Williams (with Tra Carson in for situational downs and to rest Trey) for the first half. I'd also run the ball on every first down - you know, to change things up and keep the Tigers guessing.

LSUs quarterbacks are pretty bad.

LSU only gains about 4.3 yards per rush (65th) but runs the ball more plays than any other team in the conference - 48 times per game on average. (Can you say stack the box?) A&M on the other hand, gives up 4.9 (yes) yards per rush (100th).

Two of LSUs receivers average over 21 yards per catch (wow). One of those receivers has 35 receptions on the year, while LSU's next 3 receiving leaders total 43 receptions. A&M has 4 receivers with 40 or more receptions each.

GUT FEELING

Another Missouri-type game but the Aggies pull it out this time. The Farmers fight early and come out to a 21-13 halftime lead. However, in the 3rd quarter, the LSU running game and defense take over for 15 minutes and rally the Tigers to a 26-21 lead (failed 2-point conversion). Kyle Allen drives the field once in the 4th Quarter and Tra Carson picks up a 3rd and Goal carry for the winning Touchdown; 29-26 Aggies (KA to Cam Clear for a 2 pt conversion).

The Tigers make one last attempt, but in true Les Miles style, Anthony Jennings forgets whether he's supposed to kneel the ball or spike it on 3rd and 11 from the 30 yardline; he winds up running around in the back field and kneeling the ball at the 35. They attempt the 52 yard field goal with 0:03 (whoop!) seconds left, but Sumlin calls timeout to freeze K Colby Delhoussaye - he makes the first attempt which doesn't count, and then hits the crossbar on the 2nd attempt - no good.

29-26 Aggies; Mark Snyder is released on Friday afternoon.

LOOK AHEAD

We are not scared to play t.u. in the Texas Bowl we just don't want to subject ourselves to their idiocy and ex-girlfriend batshit craziness. Essentially, there is nothing to gain for A&M to play Texas in a bowl: 1) we are already dominating in-state recruiting, 2) we have already played on of the toughest schedules in the country, and 3) a win against anyone in a bowl will put us in the Top-25 again most likely. Why risk recruiting dominance and an end-of-year ranking to a team / fanbase who is still in denial of their own pathetic college football outlook for the next 10 years (or as long as they are in the Big 12) and can't muster the humility or honesty to remember how events played out to get them into the situation in which they find themselves (and, no, it's not a good place to be).

A quick look at how things have shaped up the last couple weeks.

Let's start with the Auburn game when Texas A&M finally found consistency with both the running and the passing game. The Aggies finished that game with a 49% success rate, but for three quarters, they were humming along at near 60%. The last three possessions were three and outs, nine plays without any success, so that dropped the overall number, but prior to that, it was as good as A&M has played all year. 15 plays of at least ten yards was a nice rebound after so many weeks of not making big plays. Considering that in the three games prior to the Auburn game, our three starting running backs only managed ONE run of 10+ yards (an 11 yard run against ULM), having six such runs against Auburn alone was great.

The Mizzou game was a bit more of a struggle. The Aggies only had a 41% success rate. However, a couple big plays really helped and A&M was a yard away from scoring 34 points on a rainy day against the 15th best defense in the country. Not necessarily a bad day.

Looking at the running backs, they continue to not only rotate carries, but rotate effectiveness. All three have good weeks and bad weeks. Brandon Williams, for example, had five mini-explosives (runs of 7+ yards) on 12 attempts against Auburn, but then had zero effective runs on seven attempts against Mizzou.

Tra Carson and Trey Williams also had decent days against Auburn, each with four mini-explosives (on ten and nine carries, respectively), whereas against Mizzou, Tra Carson kept it up with a 60% success rate and three mini-explosives (on ten carries), while Trey (keeping up?) had only four carries.

Kyle Allen is playing fairly efficient, consistent football the last two games. One thing I've noticed is that our wide receiver rotation has really tightened up. Not as much subbing as we were doing earlier in the year. For proof, 80% of his passes the last two games have targeted Speedy Noil, Malcome Kennedy, Ricky Seals-Jones, or Josh Reynolds. Our four starters. Guys like Boone Niederhofer, Sabian Holmes, Ed Pope, Jeremy Tabuyo, etc. are not getting the reps (and therefore, the targets) right now. I think it's helping Kyle Allen.

Josh Reynolds and Kyle Allen have been on point lately and Reynolds is Allen's favorite downfield target. Allen has targeted Reynolds 15 times in the last two games, with 11 completions for 213 yards and four touchdowns. Over 14 yards per target when looking his way. That's a fantastic number.

For safe, move-the-chains type passes, Allen is looking at Seals-Jones quite often. He has targeted him 14 times in the last two games, completing ten of them for just 66 yards. Not even five yards per target.

Malcome Kennedy is a nice blend of the two. Plenty of short, safe targets along with a few big plays. He's been targeted 12 times, with seven catches for 140 yards in the last two games. 11.7 yards per target.

Speedy Noil is the one that I argue needs to get more passes. He's only been targeted seven times by my count in the last two weeks, catching just four passes for 52 yards. If we can incorporate him more, it will really help.

Regarding Noil, you may recall in the middle of the year when we started moving him around to different positions, putting him in the slot, etc. That has gone away. As we've settled into our starting four receivers (and gone back to being a primarily 10 personnel team the last two weeks), we've kept them all in the same place. I assume this is partly to keep things simple for Kyle Allen. With a bye week to prepare for LSU, I would not be surprised to see A&M show a few more things in the way of formations, trick plays, and personnel movement.

Once we have our bowl opponent set, I will do a big, comprehensive summary of the entire season along with, hopefully, a couple posts looking at the Aggie offense in greater detail and looking at the bowl opponent. Happy Thanksgiving, and BTHO LSU!

Predict the score of this week’s matchup that has the Texas A&M Aggies (7-4) facing the LSU Tigers (7-4) at Kyle Field

Big Winner

Last game's winner was TeamBlue02 (shoot it!) who accurately picked the Mizzou Tigers to defeat our beloved Texas A&M Aggies by the score of 34-27, earning him a perfect score of 0. Althuough it was not needed; I feel inclined to reveal the tie breaker answer - to "How many rushing plays will Texas A&M attempt?" - was 27 rushing plays according to the game's stat log.

Before You Play

Before making your guess, it will behoove you to read the following GoodBullHunting.com articles in order to educate your guess beforehand:
"First Glance" by Spadilly
"The TAILGATE" by Fletcher, Hypno-Toad, Thacktor, Dr. Comacho, and CuppyCup
and (although it has no bearing on the 2014 game) check out:
"Aggies playing SEC Football versus LSU before we were in the SEC" by Dr. Norris Camacho

Feel free to go ahead and make a prediction now, and if you change your mind come back and make a new entry (I delete older predictions that are duplicates anyhow)

Erik's App

Again, Erik has setup a pretty cool web-app that keeps a running score for the season and gives the top winners each week. You can view that App at the link provided below, and if you have any constructive suggestions for Erik, please leave them in the comments section below.
Erik's App - CLICK HERE

Make Your Prediction

The premise is simple: you fill out the form below with your username, your prediction on the score, and the team that you root for (this won't be held against you). There will also be a weekly tie-breaker question, because unlike Soccer (the other Football), we don't allow ties in America. Your score will be the sum of the absolute value of the difference between the predicted and actual score for each team. For example: If you predict the Aggies will beat their Opponent 47-19 and the actual score was 54-13, you would receive a score of: |47-54| + |19-13| = 13

Floyd Raven, Sr., Howard Matthews and Dezhazor Everett have finally attained that coveted skill that all DBs strive to attain: flight. Jennings would worry about this more, but right now he has a more pressing issue: Justin Bass and Donnie Baggs coming for him on a blitz after having accidentally slept in radioactive waste the night before. It seems that the sight of two pissed off 8' tall senior linebackers who glow in the dark is pant-shittingly scary.
