As we move further back in our defensive recruiting refresher, the quality depth does not improve. The Aggies are looking to take at least two safeties in 2014 to go with the three they took last year.

Commit:

Dylan Sumner-Gardner

The West Mesquite safety, and high school teammate of 2013 signee Kam Miles, is a consensus four-star prospect and top-15 guy in Texas his year. When he committed back in March, DSG chose the Ags over the likes of Texas, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, LSU, and roughly ten other programs. At 6'1" 195-pounds, Sumner-Gardner is a tackling machine out of the defensive backfield with plenty of speed as well. He has accepted an invitation to attend the 2014 Under Armour All-American Game.

Offers:

Jamal Adams

The 247Sports Composite five-star, and #2 safety in the nation, understandably has offers from almost every major program. At the moment however, it seems to be a three horse race with Florida in the lead over Texas A&M and Texas. Adam's God-father is Gator's wide receiver coach Joker Phillips and that will be a tough obstacle to overcome for either Texas program. A four year starter for Hebron (Carrollton, TX), Adams has tallied almost 180 tackles, 9 interceptions, 1 force fumble, and 1 fumble recovery heading into his senior season. He is also a 2014 Under Armour All-American selection.

Steven Parker

Defensive backs coach Marcel Yates also has the Aggies in the top three for Jenks, Oklahoma safety Steven Parker. The Aggies are battling the home-state Sooners for Parker's commitment with both schools thought to be ahead of Oklahoma State. Parker is a consensus four-star and ranked as the #9 safety in the country by 247Sports Composite. At 6'2" 190-pounds and a 4.5 forty, he is rangy with good size.

In-State Guy I Like:

Davion Hall

Hall was also listed in our wide receiver break down you can read HERE because that's where he wants to play at the next level. He is however, listed as a safety prospect by most services. 247Sports Composite has him as the #5 safety in the nation. The Texarkana native is still a soft Baylor commit and this recruitment looks like it will be interesting to follow up until Signing Day.

After taking five in the last class, the Aggies look to further strengthen their depth with another 3-4 'backers in 2014.

Another position on the roster where lack of depth reared its ugly head in the first game of the season is Linebacker. If the game against Rice is any indication, every 'backer taken in last year's class is going to see playing time this Fall.

Commits:

Hoza Scott

The 6'2" 225-pound Outside Linebacker from La Porte was at one time considered one of, if not the, best recruit for 2014 in Texas.
Josh Walker

Another consensus four-star Outside Linebacker in the books for the Ags, Walker checks in at 6'1" 220 pounds. When he committed back in October, Walker chose the Aggies over a handful of former Big12 rivals in the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. As a Junior, he recorded 106 tackles including 6 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.

Zach Whitley

Listed as the #5 Inside Linebacker in the country by 247Sports.com Composite Ranking, Whitley was at one time considered a heavy Aggie lean before making a surprise commitment to Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide back in May. Whitley was the Aggies' first offer on the inside and it's a safe bet that they won't give up until the ink is dry on signing day.

Josh Mabin

The three-star from Klein Oak is a physical presence in the middle who excels against the run. After a knee injury in 2012, some feared his lateral agility was in jeopardy and it's thought that is what kept A&M from ever extending a scholarship offer. However, Oklahoma State had no worries about the knee and secured Mabin's commitment back in early August over Bedlam rival Oklahoma.

Another Inside Linebacker on the Ags' list but yet to be offered is Argyle's Sam Sizelove. The 6'3" 230-pound Kansas State commit also has offers from Texas Tech, Baylor and SMU among others. I wish I had highlights to break his game down but his HUDL highlights are private. I did find this jewel on Youtube that all Aggies should enjoy. (Sorry Jake Raulerson)

Definitely the biggest question mark position on the team, Coach Terry Price looks to build on his impressive 2013 haul.

Even after taking three defensive ends and three defensive tackles last year, the Aggies are still looking to add quality depth up front. The focus for 2014 is on defensive ends but they won't pass up on a talented tackle to go with DeShawn Washington either.

Commits:

DeShawn Washington (DT)

The Nederland big man chose the Aggies over Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech back in March. The 6'3" 280-pounder projects as a tackle on the next level, but is athletic enough to play end at times in high school. He is versatile enough to play either tackle position once he gets to Aggieland but in my opinion, will be best utilized in the 3-technique. Washington is rated as a four-star prospect by 247Sports.com Composite Ranking and is listed as the #19 player in Texas.

DeShawn Washington HUDL Highlights

Jarrett Johnson (DE)

Another player who picked Texas A&M over former Big12 rivals Texas and Oklahoma. The Katy Seven Lakes weak-side end is a bit raw, but flashes his athletic ability on tape. Give him a few months with strength coach Larry Jackson and Terry Price and the sky is the limit. Johnson is a four-star according to 247Sports.com Composite and ranked as the #33 player in Texas.

Offers:

Myles Garrett (DE)

Arguably the #1 player in the state, the 6'4" 250-pound Arlington Martin end should be the top player on the Aggies' big board. Despite offers from Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State; Garrett seems to be focused on three schools: Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and TCU. The consensus five-star is ranked as a top 20 player in the country and has accepted an invite to play in the Under Armour All-American game.

Myles Garrett HUDL Highlights

Qualen Cunningham (DE)

The Aggie legacy from Chandler, Arizona recently cut is his list down to five schools.

The Aggies have been the longtime favorites but it seems lately the USC Trojans have started to make a late push. The 6'4" Cunningham projects as a weak-side end at the next level and is a consensus four-star prospect. 247Sports.com ranks him as the #157 player in the country.

Gerald Willis

At 6'3" 275-pounds, the New Orleans, Louisiana native projects as a strong-side end or defensive tackle at the next level. Rated as a five-star and the #2 defensive tackle in the nation, Willis had 100 tackles and 13 sacks for his Edna Karr program last year. As with all top-flight Louisiana prospects, it's going to be tough to get him away from Les Miles. However, as of now, the Ags have positioned themselves as well as they could.

After reaping the benefits in 2012 of having the best offensive line in the country, what are the Aggies doing to continue building that pipeline?

We know Coach BJ Anderson loses Jake Mathews after 2013. But what about multi-year starters Cedric Ogbuehi or Jarvis Harrison? Is it certain that they leave a year early and declare for the NFL draft? No. But, the possibility is there. Now that your day is ruined, let me remind you that the cupboard is not completely bare behind the first-string guys. Last February, the Aggies signed three talented linemen in Ismael Wislon, Joas Aguilar, and JUCO Jeremiah Stuckey. There is also J.J. Gustafson waiting to enroll in January. Lets take a look to see what the coaching staff is doing in the 2014 class to keep building on their momentum.

Commits:

Koda Martin

The 6'6" son of the Manvel head coach is very lean at the moment; weighing in at only 250 pounds. He has the frame to put on good weight but it will obviously take some time. Martin is very athletic and could also project to tight end or even defensive end. Koda chose the Aggies over offers from Alabama, LSU, Texas, and Oklahoma.

Read SBNation's scouting report on Martin here

Kealvin Davis

The big athletic tackle from Lakeview Centennial was one of the first pledges in the 2014 class when he committed back in January. Davis grew up a Texas Longhorn fan and chose the Aggies over Oregon, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Baylor. Currently weighing in around 260-pounds, Davis will need to bulk up significantly before contributing at the college level. The good news is at 6'5", he has the frame to add plenty of good weight.

Kealvin Davis HUDL Highlights

Zach Ledwik

A relatively unknown prospect when he received his first in-state offer from the Texas Tech Red Raiders at the end of May. A couple of weeks later, the Aggies and Longhorns were battling it out for Ledwik's commitment. Since choosing the Ags, Ledwik's stock has blown up. In Rivals.com rankings that were released earlier this week, he is rated as a four-star and the 177th player in the nation. One of Ledwik's biggest strengths is his versatility. He projects at tackle but could easily play any position along the offensive line.

*Unfortunately there is no film on Ledwik available

Offers:

Braden Smith

Ranked by 247Sports' Composite Rankings as a top 50 player in the country, Smith understandably has a Who's Who of College Football offer list. Projected by the recruiting services as either a guard or tackle, Smith is a guard all the way for me. The 6'6" 290-pound senior from Olathe, Kansas is plenty physical but may not have the athleticism Coach Sumlin and Coach Anderson covet for the bookends at Texas A&M.

Casey Tucker

Continuing the out-of-state offers for offensive line, the Aggies went after Qualen Cunningham's Chandler, Arizona teammate in Tucker. Casey is also a consensus four-star player and is rated by 247Sports' Composite as the 76th best player in the country. A tackle all the way, Tucker is an athletic pass protector as well as a devastating run blocker. The Aggies' main competition for his signature at this point seems to be the home town Arizona State Sun Devils.

In-State Guy I Like:

Austin Schlottmann

In my personal opinion, Austin is one of the most underrated players in the state this year. The Brenham Cub, and current TCU commit, is 6'5" 285 lbs. and is a guard all the way for me. If I had one word to describe Schlottman, it's "punishing." As you can tell from his highlights below, he just destroys defenders when run blocking. The Ags were interested in Austin back in the spring but an offer was never given. I think he's a great pick up for the Horned Frogs and will be very successful in the Big 12.

After signing six receivers last year, coach David Beaty looks to continue his impressive positional haul in 2014.

After losing three starters from the 2012 season, The Aggies took six receivers in the 2013 recruiting class. With one commitment, and almost 15 outstanding offers, the Ags don't seem to have any interest in slowing down. This article will cover some of the high priority guys and local talent. As prospects bump their interest level and move up the board, we'll break them down.

Commit:

Jamal Jeffery

The 3-star Lufkin native committed to Kevin Sumlin back in December and that's a far as his recruitment process has gone thus far. The 5'9" Jeffery projects as a slot receiver at the next level where he can utilize his quickness and route running abilities to separate from defenders.

Jamal Jeffery HUDL Film

Offers:

Mark Andrews

The 6'6" teammate of Kyle Allen unofficially visited College Station this past weekend. Built in the mode of Mike Evans, Andrews is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses, especially at the high school level. Like Evans, he translates a basketball background into attacking balls in the air as well as shielding defenders. Andrews has close to 20 offers from all over the country including Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State, etc... The Oklahoma Sooners seem to be the Ags main competition at the moment with things heavily trending toward the Aggies.

Speedy Noil

Rated as the #1 wide receiver in the nation by 247Sports.com, Speedy plays quarterback for his New Orleans high school. With the ball in his hands, the 5'9" Noil has elite quickness and agility, that makes him very elusive to go on top of 4.40 speed. He also vertical jumped 45.3"(!!!!) two weeks ago at The Opening in Oregon. Although he has offers from every top program in the country, this will eventually boil down to a battle between the in-state LSU Tigers and the Aggies.

KD Cannon

The Mount Pleasant receiver followed up a 1,000 yard sophomore campaign with over 1,600 yards as a junior in 2012. A consensus top-5 wideout, Cannon seems to have an affinity for Big 12 football. Despite heavy interest from the likes of Texas and Oklahoma however, it seems to be only a matter of time before he jumps on what Art Briles is selling in Waco and becomes a Baylor Bear.

Davion Hall

Listed as a safety by some recruiting services, I put Hall here because it's where he wants to play at the next level and if he ends up signing with Baylor (where he's currently committed), there's no doubt he'll be an offensive weapon. Personally, he's my top receiver in the state this year. Either way, with Hall's size and speed, he'll be an impact guy on either side of the ball. Up to this point, he hasn't shown a lot of interest in the Aggies but his commitment to the Bears might not be the strongest. Hall was in Tuscaloosa this week visiting the Crimson TIde.

With the promotion of running back coach Clarence Mckinney to Offensive Coordinator, the tailback position became that much more important to the Aggie offense. What will the staff look to do with 2014 recruiting?

The Aggies' backfield in 2013 is LOADED. In fact, I would put our boys up against any unit in the country. The most underrated Aggie of all time, Ben Malena is back for his senior campaign to go along with super-sophomore Trey Williams. Add transfers Brandon Williams and Tra Carson, and you've got everything you could need at the position for this season.

After taking one tailback in 2013 with four-star James White from Pearland Dawson, that would give the Ags four scholarship backs headed into the 2014 season (assuming neither of the transfers declare early for the NFL draft). Add to that the current commitment of Lake Travis Shaun Nixon to this class and it would seem the Aggies could be done at the position, even with a few outstanding offers on the table.

Commit:

Shaun Nixon

The 15-4A 1st Team All-District selection committed to Coach Sumlin back in November. Nixon is a consensus four-star back, who fits perfectly into a spread offense. He is very quick with great balance which makes him a difficult target in space. When someone does put a hit on him, he's powerful enough to fight through a one man tackle. He is also a very good receiver out of the backfield, as evident by his almost 800 yards receiving in his high school career.

Offers:

Leonard Fournette

Joe Mixon

The Aggies also have outstanding offers to Leonard Fournette, the #1 player in the country from New Orleans, and top-50 national prospect, Joe Mixon out of Oakley, California. Both are immediate impact players who the Ags would take in a heartbeat. However, the Ags are not legitimate candidates for either prospect at this time.

Kevin Shorter

An offer has also been extended the Newton athlete who ran for just over 1,800 yards last year. Shorter is classified as an athlete however, because he could also play DB in college. The Aggies are thought to be in Shorter's top three along with Arkansas and LSU. If he does end up choosing an SEC-West rival, it would not be a shock to see the Aggie staff use that scholarship at another position.

Kevin Shorter HUDL Film

In-State Guy I Like:

Justin Stockton

The Cibolo Steele speedster's film has disappeared off the internet it seems after he committed to Texas Tech. Kliff Kingsbury hired his former high school coach Mike Jinks as Tech's Running Back coach and received a verbal commitment from Shorter not long after. Stockton is a smaller, explosive back that might not hold up well in the SEC. However, He's a great fit in Kingsbury's system in my opinion and I look for him to do big things in the Big 12.

With the Heisman Trophy winner suiting up for what could be his last fall in College Station, quarterback coach Jake Spavital is on the trail to find the next Johnny Football.

Like every other year, the State of Texas is full of promising high school quarterbacks that will litter college football rosters all across the country for the next 3-5 years. Surprisingly however, what the Lone Star State is missing in the 2014 class is quality at the top. In fact, Denton Guyer's Jerrod Heard is the only consensus top-40 signal caller among the various recruiting services. Compare that with five (Cody Thomas, JT Barrett, Kohl Stewart, Tyrone Swoopes, and Kenny Hill) in 2013.

With the Aggies' lack of interest in Heard, and his verbal to the Longhorns last August, understandably the staff has focused their attention across state lines for their answer in this class. The Aggies have already missed out on their first offer, Edmond, OK pro-style QB Justice Hansen, who eventually chose the hometown Sooners over the Ags.

Current Offers:

Kyle Allen

The 6'2" 190-pound quarterback from Scottsdale, AZ is ranked as the #5 pro-style QB in the country. As a junior he threw for over 3,200 yards with 36 touchdowns to just 7 picks and has already accepted an invitation to the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. After making a favorable impression at the Maroon and White Game, the Aggies made Allen's top five list this week.

Brandon Harris

The 6'2" 185-pound quarterback for Parkway H.S. in Bossier City, LA is one of the top dual-threat QBs in the country. As a Junior, Harris threw for over 2.600 yards with 26 touchdowns through the air and added 12 more on the ground. Offered on May 1 by the Aggies, Harris has seen his recruitment take off in the past 30 days. With almost 20 offers to his name, including every SEC West team, he has began taking unofficial visits across the country. This past weekend he was in Baton Rouge, today he'll be in Tuscaloosa and finish the week in Columbus, OH over the weekend. Harris has yet to visit Aggieland but that should change quickly, as he's set a decision date for mid July.

In-State Guy I Like:

Jarrett Hildreth

The Clear Creek (League City, TX) quarterback is 6'3" and 215 pounds and threw for almost 3,000 yards as a Junior with 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Hildreth has more than adequate arm strength and what jumps out to me is his accuracy with his throws, even on the move or with someone in his face. The recruiting process is just starting for Jarrett with offers currently from Houston and UTSA. That could change this weekend when he camps in Stillwater and looks to impress the Oklahoma State coaches.
