The Aggies are taking care of the basics and winning with a simple yet effective running attack

Over the last couple years I have definitely focused more on the passing game than the running game when writing these articles, and with A&M’s style of offense, who could blame me? But big changes are afoot in Aggieland as A&M is getting it done with their feet rather than their arm...s.

Two big things to show you this week. First let’s go back to the 89 yard touchdown run by Trayveon Williams against Auburn. Here is the formation.

Auburn has six defenders in the box, while A&M has six blockers. What A&M does is leave the circled defender unblocked. He is the read on the play. The H-back, Ricky Seals-Jones, will also go to the same side as the unblocked defender.

Get used to this, you’re going to see it a lot in this article. What I love about this is that if the defensive end stays wide and the running back gets the ball, the Aggies still have five blockers for five defenders. However, with Seals-Jones pulling around in front of Trevor Knight, he now becomes a lead blocker for Knight if the defensive end crashes inside and Knight keeps the ball.

On this play, a couple important things happen. One is that the strong safety sprints down into the box, leaving just one deep safety. So as you see here, Knight is reading the unblocked defensive end, leaving five blockers for five defenders. The two linebackers haven’t been engaged yet.

But here’s where A&M’s offensive line does a masterful job. They execute their combo blocks and move to the second level very well. Everyone is blocked, hat on hat as they say. And with the strong safety coming down, he has run himself right out of the play.

And this becomes a touchdown rather than a first down because Trayveon Williams makes one person miss. Perfectly blocked, and all is well.

So now that we see the play run from that formation, let’s look at how it went down against Arkansas. The first example was on the first drive. Arkansas played with seven in the box rather than six, but it was essentially the same as having that safety from the play above come down into the box. The Aggies will leave the circled defender unblocked and then have six blockers for six defenders.

Just like the example above, at the snap there are two combo blocks (the LG and C and the RG and RT) that establish the line, followed by the two linemen releasing upfield to block those unoccupied linebackers.

Later in the first quarter, same concept, same alignment with the ball on the hash and the H-back into the boundary, and the same seven man box, but this time Arkansas is shifted further into the boundary.

The play doesn’t not work this time because left tackle Avery Gennesy gets beaten to the inside by the defensive end and left guard Colton Prater whiffs on blocking the linebacker when he moves to the second level.

Next time the play occurs is on the first play of the second quarter. Same formation (sometimes there are two receivers to the field and sometimes to the boundary but that’s not really relevant) and again Arkansas has a six man box (instead of seven in the two examples above) but they walk a safety down into the box just like Auburn did in the first example.

The unblocked defender is circled.

Here’s the key on this. This play actually should not have worked because Gennesy whiffed on his block. Focus on the left tackle for A&M and watch as he completely missed the linebacker. The defensive end crashed inside to take away the hand off, so Knight kept the ball. The safety in the box can be accounted for by Seals-Jones leading the way, but with Gennesy whiffing, this play should be dead.

Two things happen though. One, the linebacker hesitates and doesn’t make a play that he should make. And two, credit Gennesy for not giving up on his assignment. Even though he missed it initially, he still comes back and blocks the man he’s supposed to block, and it just so happens to spring Knight for a touchdown.

Next example, 1st and 10 later in the second quarter. Once again, the H-back is into the boundary side and the running back is to the field. Arkansas has a six man box with two deep safeties and now a nickel back that could potentially be a seventh man in the box.

Knight decides to keep the ball when reading the first defensive end, but that creates a second read he must make. Now that the nickel back is hanging out there, Knight has an option to keep running with the ball if that defender stays wide with our slot receiver or now he can throw the ball to Christian Kirk if that defender hangs inside.

Knight decides to throw and unfortunately, makes a bad throw. But now you can start to see how these plays all build on themselves.

Before halftime, we see the same play again. And now A&M starts to do it from slightly different looks. Instead of lining up an H back in the boundary, the Aggies go with four wide receivers and motion Christian Kirk across. It’s a different personnel group and a different formation but Kirk’s motion across serves exactly the same purpose as the H-back in the examples above. And as in all of these examples, the Aggies are leaving the defensive end to the field unblocked.

This time the unblocked defensive end not only forces Knight to keep by convincing him he had sold out on the running back, he also still essentially blows up the carry by Knight. Good play by him and perhaps some indecision by Knight. It was blocked well had he handed it off.

Next example, we’re back to a six man box with 2 deep safeties and a nickel back hanging out to the field side. I think Knight made the wrong read here personally, because it sure looks like a lot of green with a blocker in front of him if he had kept the ball.

But let’s take a quick look at something else. Go back to that play and watch the safety on the near side. Notice how his eyes are in the backfield the entire time and he pays no mind to the wide receiver running right past him? He never once acknowledges Reynolds at the bottom. It’s subtle, but it’s important, because on the very next play, his eyes stay in the backfield and his body language is identical. One step towards the line of scrimmage is enough to get him out of position to defend the deep ball. And the Aggies score a touchdown.

Getting back to the run game and particularly the zone read game, now is where some fun wrinkles start coming out. None of the examples above have been run from a trips formation. Now the Aggies go with trips to the field, which really spreads out the Arkansas defense, and instead of using combo blocks where linemen release up to the second level, the Aggies pull both the center and the tackle.

And since the defensive end stays wide, Knight hands it off (correct read), and now you again have five blockers for five defenders.

Also note how well center Erik McCoy turns the defender to create a lane for Williams. Perfect execution all around.

A little bit later, A&M does another wrinkle, pulling the guard and tackle rather than center and tackle. On this particular example, we get another RPO situation. Knight keeps the ball when the defensive end crashes, but then when the safety comes up so aggressively, Knight knows that Speedy Noil has a one on one matchup with no safety help so he throws it up for Noil, who draws a pass interference call.

Very next play, Aggies line up in the same formation (trips into the boundary) and do the same exact play (zone read with guard and tackle pulling to lead the way). Arkansas defends it differently though.

Here are the previous play and the current play, pre-snap.

In addition to the alignment differences, the Arkansas line plays it differently, crashing on the running back in the first example but staying wide in the second example. And in that second example, Knight reads it correctly and hands the ball off, and as we’ve seen in many of these, reading the sixth defender allows your other five blockers to block their five box defenders, and A&M executes it perfectly.

A&M killed Arkansas (and Auburn) with that play. Lest you worry that the Aggies are too predictable (so when they line up like that, it’s always that play?!?), A&M also does plenty of of other stuff from the same formation. Noel Mazzone always talks about “protecting” your pet plays by also having other things to do from the same formations and looks. But I would certainly expect future teams to start trying different approaches to stop this. I really like the pulling linemen wrinkle that A&M mixes in.

Now, for some passing game. Remember how Trevor Knight completed something like four or five slants against Auburn and there was talk of how comfortable he was with that? Arkansas clearly noticed and game planned for it on the first play of the game.

A&M obviously wanted to get Knight into a rhythm early with some slants, passes that proved to be in his wheelhouse the week before. So the first play is a slant to the single receiver on the boundary. But watch what their defensive end does.

Arkansas did a great job of planning there and got exactly what they wanted. And Trevor Knight didn’t recognize it and almost threw an interception. Luckily, A&M got away with it.

On the very next play, the Aggies were still determined to get a slant pattern for Knight so they run slants to the trips side, and he gets it done.

But after that, A&M couldn’t find anything to work in the passing game for most of the first half. In the third quarter, A&M came out and again decided to try to give Knight a throw he is comfortable with.

This time, they put the trips into the boundary, leaving the single receiver with a ton of space to work.

No doubt Knight checked to make sure the defensive end wasn’t sagging into the throwing lane this time. Nice completion.

In the fourth quarter, we go back to it again, again putting the trips into the boundary to give the receiver (Speedy Noil this time) a whole lot of space to work with. The play was there to be made but the throw was behind Noil.

So here’s the big crescendo to this. The play above was 2nd and 2. The next play, A&M gains a couple to get a first down, and then on 1st down, they go right back to this formation again and run the RPO I showed earlier.

Then on the very next play, they stick with the same formation, and it’s the 33 yard touchdown by Trayveon Williams that I broke down earlier.

So how do they tie in? Three plays in a row with the same formation on offense. The first two plays end up being passes to the single receiver. On the third play, the safety starts to finally respect that threat and now he is lined up a little wider than he was on the first play.

First play:

Third play:

It’s not much, just a few yards. Just wide enough to be out of position when a running back runs through.

It’s chess, not checkers.

Other notes and neat-o’s

Sometimes A&M runs the zone read from a normal 2x2 spread formation. Six defenders in the box here, so if you leave one defender unblocked and read him, you have five blockers for five defenders.

Erik McCoy (#64) is very good.

And sometimes the Aggies run simply because there are only five defenders in the box and five blockers can block five. No one needs to be unblocked. Just block the four linemen and then get one blocker up to the second level to the linebacker.

Same idea here. (Technically there are six in the box but one follows Kirk out to the flats and then we just block their five.)

A recap of the press conferences held by Texas A&M coaches and players as they come off a win against the Arkansas

The coaches and players returned to College Station to meet with members of the media after an invigorating 45-24 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks in Dallas. With clear signs that the wrecking crew has finally returned, and with a run game that A&M has been sorely lacking in recent years, the Aggies look like a complete team ready to face-off against a 2-2 South Carolina Gamecocks squad coming off a loss to Kentucky.

With nothing to be bashful about this week, here’s what the coaches and players had to say about the previous and upcoming games:

Head Coach Kevin Sumlin

No comments on injuries to Ricky Seals-Jones, Myles Garrett or Justin Evans; a response that is “no different than usual”

Sumlin believes this team is stronger than last year’s team; a result of maturity and “dramatic changes to the player development plan.”

— “We needed to change our body types to look like the rest of the teams in our league. We spent a lot of time on nutrition and with our sports science people. We've done a lot regarding player development. “

Trayveon Williams and Colton Prater noted for “their work ethic off the field,” studying, working out - doing all of the right things outside of practice.

Regarding the feeling of this team compared to previous years:

— “The first four games are probably a little bit different [than previous years]; playing UCLA, at Auburn, and Arkansas. We have a better feel for where we are as a team than we did 4-games ago, 1-year ago, or 2-years ago... as I said, ‘Does that guarantee a change?,’ it doesn’t. But, I think what you can do is evaluate better where you are as a team than you could two years ago.”

Regarding whether or not Josh Reynolds likes being under the radar:

— “I don’t know if Josh likes being underrated, I just know that I like that he’s on our team. You know, he’s not real talkative, not a real flashy guy... I’ve had pro-scouts ask me ‘how fast is he?’, I don’t know, he’s fast enough... I haven’t seen him get caught many times.... He wants to be an elite player. It was evident after the bowl game when he came in and knocked on the door, and things were the way they were, for him to come tell me ‘Coach, I’m not happy how I finished and I’m going to come back next year and work harder and be the best I can be,’ that was great news for our team, it was great news for him, great news for everybody. I think he’s going to try and make the most out of this senior year.”

Believes the success of the D-line can be primarily attributed to the depth and rotation this year

On South Carolina:

— “Will is a guy that has a lot of experience in this league. They’re entering a new system. I think they’ve been pretty good defensively... I think they’re what.. 2nd in scoring defense I think?... Defensively they’re always going to be good. They’re still trying to get an identity offensively. But defensively, there’s never been a Will Muschamp team that hasn’t been salty.”

A few guys on the team have never been on a plane before Auburn, and they had the hell scared out of them when the plane bumped on the runway in College Station and had to circle around again.

“He claims he was part of it,” referring jokingly to Larry Jackson claiming to be on the Wrecking Crew.

On this defense being compared to the Wrecking Crew of the ‘90s:

— “[The "Wrecking Crew" label] is something you earn. That's not really up to me. For years, I wasn't here. I was a player in the 80s. Then I was a young coach. A&M played good defense. From the outside looking in, that's what you saw. That was an identity. Because it was at such a high level, it's not something we're pushing, but if people start to identify us as a defense, you can't take it as anything but a compliment.”

Defensive Coordinator John Chavis

Opening statement:

— “Really excited about how our players performed in terms effort. In my opinion it was incredible. I’ve never seen a group play any harder. They did some tremendous things. Played well enough to win. The three takeaways were BIG.

Obviously there’s some negatives that I gotta do better as a coach, and that’s getting off the field on third down - and that’s obvious. And I know you probably got questions, and I’ll answer them for you.

It started really bad in the 3rd quarter. We take the ball down on offense and turn it over down on the 5-yard line, and we got ‘em pinned right where we need them. They can’t run it, gained 0 on first down, threw and incompletion, and then on 3rd down they complete it. As a defense - you can’t let that happen. You have to maintain field position. We go into the next series, they try to run it on first down - they can’t run it; they try to run it on second down - they can’t run it; and then we let them again convert.

Now you gotta give Arkansas some credit - they get good players, they coach too. But again, you gotta keep the ball pinned down. It’s a field position game.

So we go into the third series of the drive. They try to run it, they can’t run it.. they throw an incompletion, it’s third and long again, and we get an interference call. That’s 9 plays we already played when we should have been off the field. They get a little momentum, we misfed(sic) a run, they moved the ball down the field, they get it down to the 2 yard live. We played 16th... 17th... 18th... and the 19th play of the drive. And that was what was incredible - the way those kids played those 4 downs. I mean it was big in the ball game. It was as big as it gets. They denied them the end zone, and I’m as proud of that as I can be.

We gotta get some things better on 3rd down, that’s obvious, and that’s on me... that’s on me. If you wan’t to know, we had a good mix. We’re a pressure team, we’re not going to back away on that, we’re going to be that, we’ve got to be able to cover 1-on-1, we gotta be able to do those things. But the pressure has to get home. And certainly you have to give Arkansas some credit, they did a great job protecting the quarterback, but we kept coming and as we kept coming, it was a big factor in the game - obviously with the sack Dae Dae got later on in the game.

But, I will assure you that we will be bett... we’ve been great on 3rd down up until this game, we will be better on 3rd down this week. There’s no question about that.”

On the secondary:

— “It's tough for the corners to play on an island. I think the secondary played well. We need the pressure we're bringing to get home. We played some zone. We mixed it up. We can't have linebackers biting on bait. That's coaching. That's on me. I don't have problems with the secondary. We need the pressure to get to the quarterback.”

On Les Miles:

— “ I haven't talked to Les Miles yet. I hope to soon. I think that could have been done different, but that's not my call. He did a lot for that school, and he's a great man. It wasn't difficult to see it was coming.”

Offensive Coordinator Noel Mazzone

On Trayveon Williams:

— “Trayveon Williams is a good fit for what we do offensively. He's got great vision and is explosive. He's not the biggest kid, but he's tough. His skillset as a runner is obvious. The things he's done without the football are what I've been impressed with. He's not a liability there.”

On injuries:

— “Ricky Seals-Jones got hurt, and I didn't even notice that Frank Iheanacho was in the game for the rest of the game. That means he's doing his job. He's progressed as a player. We didn't skip a beat, and I didn't adjust the way I called the game. That's vitally important. That depth is good. He did a nice job.”

On Erik McCoy’s snap issues:

— “We're working on snaps every day. That's Erik McCoy's third game. He's at the hardest position. He's making all the calls along the line. You have a guy behind you screaming at you to give you the football. He's got a lot of things going on. Every once in a while, you'll have problems like that. We're working on it every week.”

3 Things We Learned: Texas A&M vs Arkansas

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Aggies ran over, around, and through the Razorbacks Saturday, riding a big second half to victory.

Another tough battle in Arlington, another Texas A&M win over Arkansas. The 2014 and 2015 games between the Aggies and the Arkansas Razorbacks were wins for A&M, but both of those felt like the Aggies were getting away with something. On Saturday night, the Aggies went out and took it, winning 45-24. Here are my biggest three takeaways.

A&M is tough

All the talk after this game was about the goal line stands by the A&M defense, and rightly so. Time after time after time, Arkansas lined up from the one or two yard line and was determined to run the ball right at the Aggie defense. It’s as if Arkansas was trying to make a statement and show the conference that their identity is still a team that can line up and run the ball right at you if need be.

But the statement made was by the A&M defense. The Aggies proved be stronger, tougher, more physical than the Razorbacks. It was stunning, and it seems to have completely changed the perception of the Aggies around the league. Just weeks ago, commentators and analysts were talking about how soft the Aggies are. Whether or not they had done their research is irrelevant at this point. Those same people are now saying that this A&M team is different. It certainly was on Saturday.

Trevor Knight the running threat

Everyone can agree that Knight, while a capable passer, isn’t going to magically turn into a top-rated passer this year. For his career, he has had ups and downs and overall, average numbers throwing the ball.

However, if he can be a legitimate running threat, that changes everything. And through four games, he hasn’t just been a legitimate threat, he has been one of the most dynamic running quarterbacks in the nation. Knight is 5th nationally in rushing yards by a quarterback and 3rd in yards per carry.

Knight is averaging over 8 yards per carry this year and already has runs of 32, 42, 48, and 62 yards. His running style is nothing like Johnny Manziel’s, but from a pure statistical standpoint, Knight has nearly been Manziel’s equal as a runner through four games. (Manziel averaged 7 yards per carry as a freshman and through four games and ran for 366 yards to Knight’s 308 with six touchdowns to Knight’s five.)

What’s really impressive about Knight is his straight line speed. His ability to take off and run has transformed this offense, and when you combine a quarterback with speed and a knack for making the right read with a running back who might be as fast as any in A&M history (freshman Trayveon Williams), the result is what happened Saturday: 310 yards on just 22 carries between Knight and Williams.

Josh Reynolds is still Josh Reynolds

Every week, Josh Reynolds seems to just go out and make big plays whenever they are needed. Against UCLA, he came down with the big touchdown catch to give A&M a fifteen point lead. Against Auburn, again he came down with one of the game’s biggest passes and also scored a touchdown as part of a solid seven catch, 98 yard performance.

And against Arkansas, he did it again, first making a reception on third down to finally help Trevor Knight get settled as a passer and then later catching the 92 yard touchdown pass that helped blow the game open.

Reynolds is currently third in the SEC in receiving yards and yards per catch has been among the conference leaders in yards and touchdowns for basically his entire career at A&M. Mike Evans was a tough act to follow as a stud wide receiver, but Reynolds has given the Aggies both consistency and big play ability at the Z position.

In 29 career games, he averages 4 catches a game for 71 yards with one touchdown every six catches. He’s not Mike Evans. But boy, he’s really, really good.

Arkansas QB Austin Allen and Texas A&M LB Claude George share respect on Twitter

pretty good bull here

Texas A&M beat Arkansas by three touchdowns Saturday night and was hounding the Hogs’ QB Austin Allen all game long. He was knocked down countless times, and at one point near the end of the second quarter it looked like Aggie LB Claude George had put him on the turf so hard that he’d have to leave the game. But he came back in and kept playing.

After the game, George reached out to Allen on social media:

basically we ran the dang ball and played mean defense

The Aggies put on an absolute show last night. There are few things that cut straight to the core of die-hard fans like swarming, aggressive defense and running the dang ball, and Texas A&M did plenty of each against the Hogs. These numbers tell a story of that night.

0: ZERO INTERCEPTIONS. This is perhaps the most encouraging part of Knight’s game: while he did make some poor throws in the first half, none of them were really dangerous or costly. We need him playing smart, and that’s what he did.

FIRSTS: This was the first time A&M had two players with 150 yards rushing in a game since 1990. Before any of the players in this game were born. Another first that is almost unbelievable: that was Myles Garrett’s first ever fumble recovery as an Ag. He’s usually the one forcing them.

MOSTS: The Aggies’ 366 rushing yards is the highest total since joining the SEC. The previous high was 361 against Mississippi State in 2012.

2: Aggie punts. Think about it: we only punted twice, and Tripucka’s average was 47.5. We had roughly half the time of possession that Arkansas had. There was one very costly fumble inside the five yard line but apart from that the offense’s efficiency was much improved.

3: fumble recoveries. This defense was swarming like crazy, playing inspired, opportunistic football. It’s a treat to watch John Chavis turn this thing around right in front of us.

3.0: Arkansas yards per rush. The vaunted power run game amassed only 120 yards on 40 plays.

4: Reynolds receptions. For 141 yards and that 92-yard TD. When he gets in stride and the ball is thrown just right, it is a thing of beauty to watch. Knight hit him for a similar long play against Auburn, so hopefully they’re getting some chemistry down.

5: total punts. The Hogs only punted three times. This was one hell of an entertaining game all-around.

7: penalties for 55 yards. This is manageable.

8: on Austin Allen. Look, this kid is good. It’s not just that he was getting obliterated and getting right back up and running the next play, it’s that he was making excellent reads and throws all night after taking repeated poundings. He’s tough but he’s also a damn fine QB. Best of luck on the rest of the season.

8/12: third-down conversions. MUUUUCH better than last week at Auburn. 75% is good.

9: tackles for Armani Watts. Throw in 2.5 for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup, and a quarterback hurry. Our safeties just take turns having tremendous games. “Oh but safeties shouldn’t lead the team in tackles bleh bleh bleh” hey these guys are ballers, and if they want to fly around and hit people I say we let ‘em.

9.9: yards per rush. 366 yards on 37 run plays. That’s runnin’ the dang ball, folks.

10: team tackles for loss. Distributed among ten different players. Lights out.

12.8: yards per carry for Trayveon Williams. 153 yards on 12 carries. He’s a brutal knockout punch in the second half after our OL has had a couple hours to tenderize an opposing defense. He’s quick, decisive, can run through the first tackle, and loves scoring touchdowns. And only a freshman.

20:15: time of possession. That’s nearly a 2:1 advantage for the Hogs. That 19-play, 9 + minute drive that resulted in 0 points pretty much summed it up.

591: total offense. On 59 plays. In just over 20 minutes. This is the output we’ve been waiting all season to see, and it couldn’t have come in a better game.

Your Fightin Texas Aggies notch a three touchdown win over #17 Arkansas

Early on this seemed like it was going to be like every other Arkansas game since 2013—with no team giving an inch and destined for a last minute finish. Then somehow A&M found its groove and managed to score 28 straight points to put the game away. This team is good...really good. Here are 5 quick thoughts:

1) REDZONE DEFENSE

What was it...two goal line stands where we stuffed them? They had the ball 6 inches from the goal line and we stopped them? John Chavis is worth every single cent that he is paid and then some. And the interior of our line is just phenomenal. Outstanding effort by the defense.

2) RUSH DEFENSE

In 2014 we gave up 285 rushing yards. In 2015 we gave up 232 rushing yards. Tonight? 120 total rushing yards to a stable of really good running backs. Like I said in point #1, this defense is for real and seems to have taken the whole “not good against the run” critique to heart.

3) RUSH OFFENSE

The thought goes that in order to win in the SEC you have to stop the run and run the ball. Tonight we did the first and we nailed the latter. Knight had 157 yards, Williams had 153. We rushed for a total of 366 yards tonight. To put that into perspective, last year we rushed for 65 total. 300 more yards. That’s just insane.

4) TREVOR

Trevor started off slow tonight and struggled early. But as with every week he did enough to get the win. Whether it was running for 150+ or hitting key passes to Reynolds or RSJ, he did what it took to get the win. I actually kind of like Sumlin’s response to folks asking about Knight’s key stats—wins. He’s leading this team to good solid wins.

5) 5 IN A ROW AGAINST ARKANSAS

We’ve now beaten the hogs 5 times in a row. We’ve beaten then with 4 different QBs, 4 Different OCs, and 2 different DCs. Arkansas is a good football team. Allen is a really good QB. Bert is a good coach. But somehow Sumlin has beaten them 5 straight. That’s ridiculous

OVERALL

This game didn’t come without a cost—we’ve got a few key injuries that could affect us down the road. But bottom line is that we got a big time win against a top 20 opponent. This team is pretty dang good y’all. Pretty pretty good.

Buckle up, it's probably gonna get wild.

WHO'S READY FOR THIS? If you've been tailgatin' for the past dozen hours, hats are off to you. It's an integral part of college football. If you've been parked on the couch watching B1G and ACC teams pummel each other senseless, that's cool too. Some of us have...unusual tastes. Anyway, Auburn's currently kicking another field goal and Butch Jones is working out a deal on his 10-year contract extension before he loses to Georgia next week. And we've got your Arkansas Week reading material to scope out while we count down the minutes.

This game might be a slugfest or a shootout, but whatever it is, it's gonna be a fun one.

Gig 'em.
