SOME MAY FIND THIS WEBSITE SOPHOMORIC. And that’s fine. It’s also apt because we’re talking about kids who have just completed the 10th grade "committing" to play college football as if it were meaningful. If your emotions hinge upon the whims of a QB who hasn’t even had a prom yet, please seek emotional assistance or at the very least hibernate through the remainder of August hey that sounds like a good idea anyway where’d I put that medication

OLYMPIC SPIRIT. Folks, it’s not all about gold medals and world records. Just making it to the Olympics is a hell of a feat, and if it’s your first time, you want to be able to take it all in and enjoy it. Like Aggie discus thrower Shelbi Vaughan did:

"I’m one of the youngest in the field," Vaughan said. "I’m 21, about to be 22 — that’s really exciting — and just being here at a young age, I have a long career ahead of me, hopefully, as long as I stay healthy. Wearing this jersey with the USA across my chest is a blessing. It’s unbelievable. Not a lot of people can say they’ve done that. I’ve done it a couple of times but never at this level. It’s the Olympics. It’s the highest stage you can get."

The rain was a particular challenge yesterday, delaying competition by a half-hour and making for some pretty sub-par competition conditions. In her case, it resulted in the rarest of throwing combos: almost missing your turn and then hitting a photog with the wet discus:

Vaughan didn’t even know her round of competition had started and nearly accidentally passed on her first throw. She happened to look at the scoreboard, while sitting on the bench, and realized it was time.

"They didn’t give us any warning," Vaughan said. "It was a little hectic at first for me. I just threw my clothes off, went up there, grabbed a discus and threw. It was just terrible."

In fact, for only the second time in her career dating to high school, Vaughan hit somebody. The discus landed out of bounds, hitting the foot of a photographer.

"I’m really sorry about that," she said.

But Shelbi handled it with ease and grace despite finishing near the bottom of the field, and that’s what the Olympics is about. Gig ‘Em, Shelbi.
