After bouncing back against State last weekend, the Ags have a chance to build back some momentum against an Auburn team that’s really been going through it lately.

Two weeks ago, following Texas A&M’s first series loss of the season at Florida, a team that had been firing on all cylinders suddenly had some questions to answer. A previously dominant pitching staff was revealed to be mortal indeed against an onslaught of pure mashers in Gainesville. And while the offense matched the Gators in terms of total run production in the series, they uncharacteristically couldn’t come up with enough timely hits, leaving quite a bit on the basepaths.

Last weekend, they took on a Mississippi State team that looked to finally have their swagger back after a couple years away. And thanks to a pair of phenomenal starts from Ryan Prager and Justin Lamkin, and a couple of mammoth performances at the plate by Gavin Grahovac and Braden Montgomery, the Aggies were able to take the series.

That brings us to this weekend’s tussle with the scuffling Auburn Tigers. Prior to the start of SEC play, Auburn was 13-3, were scoring 9.6 runs per game, and had risen up to No. 18 in the D1Baseball ranking. They were promptly dispatched by Vandy in Nashville, who swept them by a combined score of 33-12, before top-ranked Arkansas came in last weekend and took the first two games of the weekend. Then on Saturday, the Tigers came from behind to salvage the finale, 8-6, for their first SEC win of the year. Needless to say, Auburn needs this weekend’s series in the worst way.

Auburn’s biggest strength is their lineup. Don’t be fooled by their .279 team batting average, which is a mere 132nd in the country. They rank in the top 50 in walks (20th), homers (t21st), slugging (30th), and wRC+ (34th) as a team. The dudes at the top of the lineup are as good as anyone in the country, too. Sophomore catcher Ike Irish, who is currently riding an 11-game hitting streak, headlines the group, slashing .340/.430/.691, with eight homers and 34 RBI. Grad transfer SS Cooper Weiss (.320/.486/.520, 3 HR, 21 RBI) sets the table as well as anyone in the league, leading the team with 24 walks and 21 stolen bases. He’s drawn eight walks in their last three games alone. Then there’s cleanup man 1B Cooper McMurray, who leads the team in all three slash categories (.350/.505/.813), as well as homers (10), and RBI (36).

Unfortunately for Butch Thompson, they’re still looking for some answers on the mound. Opening day starter Chase Allsup ( has had a rough go in his six starts. He was bumped from his Friday night role prior to last weekend, following his worst start of the year, when he gave up seven earned on nine hits and two walks, while striking out just four in 4.0+ innings. He’s given up at least three earned runs in five of his six starts. Redshirt Junior Joseph Gonzalez, who missed basically all of last season with an injury, started off the season in the Saturday role for the Tigers, and he, too, has struggled and been bumped back in the rotation. His best start of the season came in his first start of the season, when he allowed just one unearned run on two hits and three walks, while striking out two in 5.0 innings. Since then, he’s allowed 14 earned runs in 11.2 innings across four starts. Tonight’s starter, Conner McBride (2.38 ERA, 19K/6BB, 0.97 WHIP in 22.2 IP), has been good so far this season, beginning the year as the midweek starter, before being thrust into the Game 1 role against Arkansas last weekend. And he held up well against the Hogs, giving up just one earned on four hits, two walks, and four punchouts in 4.0 innings.

As a team, Auburn pitching ranks 65th with a 4.75 team ERA, 62nd in K/9, and 55th in BB/9, none of which are too bad overall. And the underlying numbers (5.36 FIP, 5.53 xFIP) don’t hate them. Relievers Parker Carlson (0.90 ERA in 10.0 innings across 7 appearances) and John Armstrong (1.02 ERA in 14.2 innings across 8 appearances) have been outstanding, with Armstrong filling a similar role for them that Evan Aschenbeck does for A&M. Obviously, the key for the Aggie offense is to get at the starters.

And now that I’ve said that, those same embattled starters will all somehow put up like seven shutout or something dumb. Should be fun!

Andersson Garcia is our hero, even in a losing effort

Texas A&M battled back from a seemingly insurmountable deficit and got a miracle three from Andersson Garcia to force overtime. But ultimately No. 1 seed Houston escaped, beating the Aggies 100-95 in over time in the 2nd Round of the NCAA Tournament at FedEx Forum in Memphis.

The Aggies were neck and neck with the Coogs throughout the first half, emphasizing getting to the rim and drawing a slew of fouls on Houston. They trailed by only five at the break despite missing 11 free throws, making only one three pointer and only one point from leading scorer Wade Taylor. But in the second half, Houston seemed to assert it’s will, consistently working for open looks and playing the stingy defense they’re known for on the other side. As a result of that defense, the Aggies seemed to sputter offensively as the game wore on. When you’re playing perhaps the best defensive team in the country, that can happen. But the Ags did not quit, and I’m still not quite sure how they did it but A&M mounted a comeback in the closing minutes after being down by as many as 13 AND DOWN 11 with less than two minutes to go, and glue guy Andersson Garcia hit the shot of his lifetime, draining a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to OT.

Unfortunately overtime did not go the Aggies way, as the Coogs took a lead from the jump and never relinquished it. But what fight from this team in a game where I admittedly thought it was over.

The Aggies were led by Boots Radford in this one, scoring 27 points and securing 15 rebounds. Wade Taylor and Manny Obaseki (who fouled out late in regulation) also contributed 21 and 15 points, respectively, but they were also a combined 10-for-39 from the field. As a team, the Ags missed 16 free throws in this game. Despite making 17 of 20 to close out the game, those 16 misses will likely haunt these guys for a long time.

While it can be frustrating as it can be as fan to see your team come up short in such a big moment, the Coogs are a No. 1 seed for a reason, and you saw them flex that in the second half. A&M played far from a perfect game, but much of that was also forced by the play of Houston. And man, that comeback. Even though it ended in a loss, that’s something I’ll remember for a long time.

Overall, you still have to look at this season overall and consider it a success. It had it’s ups and downs, going from a preseason top 10 ranking to 15-13 at one point in the year. But ultimately the Aggies made their second straight NCAA Tournament and won their first tournament game in the Buzz Williams era.

A&M finishes the season 21-15, while Houston (32-4) moves on to face Duke on Friday at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Taking down a No. 1 seed will be no easy task

Texas A&M won their first NCAA Tournament game since 2018 on Friday night, dismantling Nebraska 98-83 Friday night in Memphis. But there is little time to celebrate, as the 8 seed Aggies now move on to face the No. 1 seed Houston Cougars on Sunday night. Unsurprisingly, the Coogs open as the prohibitive favorite, favored* by 9 points according to DraftKings Sportsbook. The over/under on the game is set at 132.5, a low number which is likely primarily due to Houston being ranked the top defensive team in the country.

Houston was the Big 12 regular season champion, is the No. 1 team according to ESPN’s basketball power index and was ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 prior to losing in the Big 12 Tournament final last week. They advanced to the second round after an 86-46 throttling of 16 seed Longwood.

Suffice to say, winning this game will be a tall task for A&M, but the Ags seem to be playing their best bassketball at the right time. The two teams played in December, with Houston winning by four, though the Aggies were without Boots Radford (injury) and Manny Obaseki had not yet been inserted into the starting lineup (who has averaged 16.7 points over the last seven games). If the Aggies hope to pull off the upset, they’ll need to continue their recent offensive resurgence, having scored 80+ in each of their last five games. If they can manage to do that, a Sweet 16 game in Dallas awaits next week.

A valiant effort by Joni Taylor’s squad

The Texas A&M men took care of business against Nebraska earlier in the night, but the Aggie women’s hoops team faced a tougher task, coming in as an 11 seed to take on the 6-seeded Cornhuskers. They hung around early and were down own seven points at the half, but appeared to let the game slip away from them in the third quarter, as the Husker lead ballooned to as many as 17 points. A&M got it back down to 10 entering the final frame, and then mounted a furious comeback and actually took the lead 59-58 with less than a minute to go. But unfortunately they came up just short, falling to the Huskers 61-59.

First March Madness win of the Buzz Williams era comes in convincing fashion

Just over a year after Texas A&M saw a first round NCAA Tournament exit at the hands of a hot-shooting Penn State team, the 9 seed Aggies exorcised that postseason demon with some hot shooting of their own, resulting in a 98-83 win over 8 seed Nebraska Cornhuskers. It marks the first NCAA Tournament win under head coach Buzz Williams, who was hired in 2019.

The game started out with both teams shooting lights out, with the Huskers and Aggies trading buckets at a blistering pace. But eventually that shooting cooled (at least for the Huskers), and Nebraska appeared outmatched as the Aggies continued the hot three-point shooting they flashed in the SEC Tournament, was very successful at dribble penetration and showed their usual rebounding prowess. After being down as many as seven points in the opening minutes, A&M went into halftime up by 14, and were never seriously challenged again.
