Signing Day Preview: Runningback

A look at what to expect on National Signing Day at the runningback position.

Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

With Christine Michael's eligibility up, Texas A&M returns 2/3 of their backfield in 2013. Ben Malena and Trey Williams return but the Aggies will also add Brandon Williams and Tra Carson to the position. Both players sat out this year according to NCAA regulations after transferring from Oklahoma and Oregon respectively. They both played as true freshmen at their former schools and were able to use a redshirt year in 2012. That will give the Ags one senior and three sophomores at position next year, making immediate playing time for an incoming freshman unlikely.

Current Verbal Commitment

James White - The Pearland Dawson back has been committed to Texas A&M for almost a year. White is a physical runner built more in the mold of a Tra Carson, who can be a workhorse for your offense. But he is not just a bruiser; he's athletic with good hands and also very good in pass protection; he doesn't give you a reason to take him off the field in passing situations. The 6' 220-pound back rushed for 2,185 yards and 28 touchdowns and added 137 yards and a score catching the ball out of the backfield. Those statistics earned him a place on the 4A All-State First Team.

What To Watch For On Signing Day

The Aggies' have their one runningback in this class and are not in the mix for any more. They made a late run at Desoto's Dontre' Wilson but the Oregon commit did not reciprocate the interest.

When They Hit Campus

The additions Brandon Williams and Tra Carson crowd the backfield a little bit. Expect White to redshirt his freshman year and get plenty of reps running with the scout team.
