The Mineola Twins. Anderson & Anderson. Some Other Dumb Nicknames. Whatever you want to throw out there, the Ags picked up a pair of solid o-linemen last night, the first OL commits since Dave Christiensen took over as the line coach/running game coordinator.
But here we pay homage to another notable pair of twin offensive linemen: Olaf and Ingmar Knudson of the Texas State Armadillo team.
The Knudsons were the unsung heroes of that team. While they did struggle mightily with protection schemes early in the season, they did manage to finally gel towards the end of the year, and their run blocking was key in the surprise tie against Kansas as the running game was a huge factor in the typhoon-like game conditions. And they really came through big against the Colts in the finale, rising to the level of the opposition and keeping All-American defensive end Harlan "Flat-top" Meyers largely in check.
It's true that offensive line is not a flashy position, and yet even so they took a backseat on their own squad to the legendary tackle Andre Krimm and even to a lesser degree the center, Manumana "The Slender," quarterback Paul Blake's best friend and roommate. Yet they consistently and quietly held down the guard positions with a stoic grace through the first several turbulent weeks of that difficult season.
So here's to offensive linemen twins. Best of luck to you Austin and Riley, and may you one day be the steady leaders that Olaf and Ingmar were.
