Once more unto the breach

Good morning. I hope you’re all able to have a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving week. Here are the facts:

The Aggies’ last game is Saturday night at 6:00 on ESPN in Baton Rouge. It’s going to be cloudy and cool, and probably very raucous.

We’re playing 5-6 LSU to keep them under six wins. 2020’s self-disciplining excepted, they haven’t missed a bowl this century.

We’re playing a lame-duck coach in his last home game just two years removed from a national title.

The Aggies can still hit ten wins this year.

These are all important and tangible things to play for in the immediate sense. But this game could also go a long way in establishing the future of this team. Line up, hit them in the mouth, play the type of tough and smart football we all know this team is capable of, and we could come out of Saturday night with a solid win that could boost us into a respectable bowl game.

Lose, and we’ll just slip back into the same cycle we’re accustomed to. LSU is always dangerous.

Three years ago, we hadn’t beaten LSU in over two decades. Now we’ve got a chance to send this senior class off with a 75% win rate against them. That’s just as big a progress marker as beating Alabama in the larger scheme of A&M in the SEC. Let’s go hit them in the teeth. Thanksgiving Football is fun. Gig ‘Em.

Haven’t seen these folks in a while. What’s Mizzou football been up too?

Howdy! Been a while since we did one of these things, but catching up with old conference-mates we haven’t seen in the better part of a decade seems like a good chance to dust off the Q&A.

I’ll be honest, I’m with Shooter from his piece in the TAILGATE: I haven’t kept up with Mizzou football over the past few years. Last time we played them, they were in the midst of winning the SEC East for the second straight year.

We asked Rock M Nation contributor Sammy Stava for a big-picture look at Missouri football since then.

GBH: The Aggies haven’t faced Missouri since 2014. Tell us what’s been going on with y’all for the past seven seasons! Y’all were winning the SEC East every year last time we hung out, things still good?

RMN: Well, after winning the SEC East in 2014, things haven’t gone so well for the Tigers. Since the start of 2015, Mizzou Football has been just an average program, and their record shows it. They’ve gone to a couple of bowl games here and there in 2017 and 2018, but there last two seasons with bowl-eligible records were ruined by a bowl ban and a COVID cancellation. All in all, things haven’t been a total disaster, but here’s hoping Eli Drinkwitz’s elite recruiting can elevate Mizzou in the future.

GBH: Give us your breakout players for offense, defense, and special teams. Who’s got the best chance to make an impact on this game?

RMN: For a breakout player on the offensive side, I’ll go with an obvious one, the team’s MVP in running back Tyler Badie. It’s scary to imagine (in a bad way) where Mizzou would be without him. It’s kind of tough to pick a breakout player on the defensive side considering Mizzou has one of the worst rush defenses in the country, but I think senior defensive back and Tulsa transfer Akayleb Evans could have a good day. And on special teams, let’s go with two — Kris Abrams-Draine, who has a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown this season, and kicker Harrison Mevis — who simply doesn’t miss field goals. Fun fact: Missouri has the No. 1 ranked special teams in Bill Connelly’s SP+ rankings! And, Badie has the best chance to make an impact on this game. He’s pretty much had a big moment in every game this season.

GBH: Do you wish to share your final score and/or other predictions?

RMN: The only way I can see Mizzou winning this game right now is that if A&M has a serious letdown performance. I think the Tigers can hang around and make things interesting for a while at home, but the Aggies are simply are going to be too much. I’ll say 37-21 TAMU.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

What You Need to Know:

The Aggies are in a funk. I don’t wish to be overly pessimistic, but this week’s opponent might not be the best opportunity to work out our own kinks.

Alabama shitcanned Ole Miss on Saturday, jumping out to a 28-0 halftime lead and holding the nation’s top offense to fewer than 300 total yards. Texas A&M has yet to surpass 300 yards of offense against a P5 team this year.

The abandonment of expectation. Folks, it doesn’t seem that the SEC title is in the stars for us this year. Perhaps it’s time to gear our sights towards a somewhat more modest target, like completing open passes or covering receivers.

PAIN. It’s been a while since we saw the Aggies get dominated on the field. The defense has been able to put up a good show for the most part and cover for the offense for extended periods of football games in 2021. Not sure if that will be enough on Saturday.

It’s the little things- Take thorough delight in the simplest of things: a solid open-field tackle. A nifty seven-yard run. Pinning the other team inside the 15 with a 50+ yard punt. Channel your best 2003 or 2008 self and embrace the calamitous nature of football. Find the fun stuff, it’s still there.
