Bringing in players from the transfer portal is exciting, because we’ve all seen examples of players coming to a new team and making an instant impact. But as we’re learning, that’s far from the norm, and you can see examples of that right here at Texas A&M. On Monday/Tuesday, the Aggies saw two of their 2023 transfer portal additions, CB Tony Grimes and LB Jurriente Davis, re-enter the portal for 2024.
Texas A&M LB transfer Jurriente Davis (@JurrienteD) has entered the transfer portal, @mzenitz and I have learned for @247SportsPortal.— Chris Hummer (@chris_hummer) January 2, 2024
Davis, who came to Texas A&M from Jackson State last year, posted 6 tackles in 2 games for the Aggies in 2023. https://t.co/trtlOWBOOU pic.twitter.com/7b2fJXJVU5
Grimes was a former five-star recruit who came to College Station from UNC, while Davis transferred here from Jackson State. Both of these players came in at positions of need, and it was assumed both would challenge for playing time. But Davis played in only a handful of games as a reserve (mostly due to the emergence of freshman LB Taurean York), and Grimes, at least partially due to injury, did not log a single snap all season.
Both players seems like guys who, if nothing else, could have provided veteran depth in 2024. But with a new coaching staff, you never know how they view the current roster and what their plans are at various positions. What the Aggies do in the transfer portal in the coming weeks could be very telling.
