Derek Miller hired as Texas A&M football General Manager

Coming with Mike Elko from Duke

NCAA Football: New Mexico at Texas A&M Maria Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports

We got some of the biggest news to date regarding Mike Elko’s new football staff at Texas A&M, as Derek Miller will follow Elko from Duke as General Manager (the same role he occupied in Durham).

Elko has known Miller for more than a decade, when Miller was a student manager and Elko was defensive coordinator at Bowling Green in 2012. Miller would graduate two years later with a bachelor’s degree in sports management and a minor in psychology. Since that time, Miller has held personnel assistant jobs at LSU and South Carolina, and been GM/Director of Player Personnel at Bowling Green (2020), East Carolina (2021) and Duke (2022-23).

This is a vital hire for Elko, as the transfer portal era has made it even more important than ever to have a competent person in this role. What once was just about coordinating recruiting visits/events has now become a true general manager role, scouting out talent in the high school and college ranks and assisting in roster management at a time when roster churn in college football has never been more rampant.

Amazingly, this role at A&M had been vacant sine June 2023, when the Aggies parted ways with Director of Player Personnel Kevin Mashak and did not hire a replacement.
