Texas A&M fans have been wondering for a few weeks when we would name our defensive coordinator, and we seem to now have our answer. According to TexAgs’ Billy Liucci, Mike Elko has tabbed Florida Gators ILB Coach Jay Batemen to run the defense in College Station.

Prior to joining Billy Napier’s Florida staff in 2022, Bateman spent three years as the Co-DC at North Carolina and five years as the DC at Army. He also had DC stints at Ball State, Elon and Siena (where he also was head coach for four seasons). By far Bateman’s best year as a coordinator came in 2018, when Army finished No. 8 nationally in total defense and No. 10 in scoring defense/run defense.

Bateman also coached alongside Mike Elko in 2004 at Richmond, where Bateman was a secondary coach and Elko coached linebackers and was the run game coordinator.
