Mistakes were made last week. I should not have included noted non Colorado resident or New Mexican Dick Dale in the playlist with Let’s Go Trippin’.*
*Writers note, that song was not included last week, but wouldn’t that have been super weird?
Holy shit was that a horse shoes and hand grenades situation(the only time almost counts), from a dick trip of monumental proportions. But 2-0 and you know, I think all Aggies feel horrible about our team. Turns on Righteous Brothers ‘You Lost that Lovin’ Feeling’
I really don’t know shit about New Mexico. Aliens, turquoise, Texans that ski in jeans and pizza on roofs. There I exhausted my knowledge of less pretty Colorado.
What I really want to talk about this week is something that probably hit a lot of the folks here at the Pirate Ship in the feels. The passing of Norm Macdonald.
Norm was one of the funniest people I ever had the pleasure of listening to. From SNL, standup, podcasts and some of the greatest late night appearances that have ever happened. I mean, for fuck’s sake he pretty much derailed a woman’s movie career in one 5 minute bit.
Conan has gone on to say that is the hardest he ever laughed. Now, one thing Norm was an absolute master at, was making comics laugh. It is something we have in common. NO I am not comparing myself to his comedic prowess, but a lot of what I write here is to make other writers, college football junkies and other degenerates giggle at some obscure reference or old football joke. Comics call it playing to the back of the room. Norm was always doing this. He was there to be a comic and find the joke even if most did not find it funny. The entire movie Dirty Work is an ode to this and it’s one of the most under-appreciated movies in a long time. If you have a few minutes watch/listen to this:
Seven minutes of only trying to make the people on that stage, and honestly probably only Bob Saget laugh. At first most didn’t know what was going on, except for maybe a few and by the end it is hilarious, genuine and made an event that can come off as mean spirited, truly memorable. Thanks Norm, I know Better than Ezra is singing your praises still.
11 AM kickoffs are not all that easy to get hyped for, but it’s the last “warmup” before we get to wear our big boy pants. I will be at a wedding Saturday evening with a bunch of other Aggies, so I’m sure it will be a delightful affair with no bitching at all. Have fun, be safe and BTHO new Mexico!
