POST GAME THOUGHTS: A&M SURVIVES IN DENVER

Whew

I’m writing this from the parking lot of Empower field and I’m exhausted. What a game. And I dont even know if I mean that in a good way. But what a damn win. There are a lot of questions after this game. Questions on personnel, play calling, and what our expectations should be of the rest of the season. Those are fair questions to ask.

But those questions should be asked tomorrow. Today we deserve to celebrate a gutsy win by your Fightin Texas Aggies. Led by an elite defense, and an offense that did just enough to overcome catastrophic challenges, we went on the road and got a win against a Power 5 opponent.

Like I said. Tons of questions to be asked. But when we REALLY needed it, the offense got an 11 play 77 yard drive to win the game. When we really needed it the defense got stop after stop.

It wasn’t pretty. But this was a gutsy gutsy win. Let’s break it down.

OFFENSE

We rushed for less than 100 yards. After King went down, it was clear that we were going to struggle to pass the ball, so Colorado stacked the box and dared us to throw. The offensive line struggled, play calling was frustrating to watch.

But we somehow ended the game with two TD drives—one of which ended in a terrible terrible way but we still drove down the field…and then that last drive where we got that TD, Calzada somehow managed to complete a few passes and lofted the ball to Spiller for a beautiful 18 yard TD.

It wasn’t pretty, but when it needed to happen we got the TD. Zach didn’t have his best day but he gutted out a victory. Kudos to him.

DEFENSE

In the first half Colorado had 66 yards passing and 142 yards rushing.

They finished the game with 187 yards rushing and 89 yards passing.

THIS DEFENSE HELD COLORADO TO 23 YARDS PASSING AND 45 YARDS RUSHING IN THE SECOND HALF.

Antonio Johnson is a star. The front four played up to their elite talent.

We needed the defense to make adjustments and man did they. Did they ever.

What a second half for this defense.

OVERALL

Like I said. Lots of questions. But that’s for tomorrow. The Aggies gutted out a win chock full of challenges on the road and did so on the back of an elite defense.

Regroup. Recalibrate. And let’s do it again next week.

BTHO new mexico.
