A&M vs. VANDY 2020 -- Log of Mond Passes

Most of us are less than gruntled about the Aggies offensive performance on Saturday night. While I've been a Team-Mond guy for his time at Aggieland, I came away from Saturday with a sense of mystified wonder at the freshman-like performance of Kellen and (maybe) his receivers. Thinking about fumbles and dropped passes at first, I (among others) began to wonder what awaits us Saturday against the Alabama 3rd string (after Saban mercifully pulls the starters in the 2nd quarter).

Trying to convince myself that it's "just rust" and an inexperienced receiver corps that led to Monds pedestrian stats, a Twitter user @PFlat2 (Michael Prince) began to break down each of Mond's passes. Using his initial evaluation, I had to check the tape myself. It's scarier than even I expected.

In short, Receivers weren't the majority of the problems. QB play and/or the offensive scheme is the problem.

I tabulated every pass Mond made (all dropbacks except for designed QB runs).

(Note: I was planning on GIF'ing everything, but this became an impossible task since I'm a technological moron. All "Time on Video" refers to this video from the treasured account of WoodlandsAggie , whose videos I singlehandedly probably doubled in views in the last 6 months.) Texas A&M vs. Vanderbilt 2020 - no huddle

So let's take a look in Tabular Form:

FYI: for Coverage, "None" > No defender within 5 yards, "Light" - 2-5 yards, "Tight" = <2 yards

Conclusions:

  1. Longest Completed Pass (in the air) = 15 yards (Pass #10). This is bad. Really bad.
  2. Mond was 2-9 on passes longer than 10 yards. Did I say this was bad?
  3. I only counted 3 out of 27 passes where Mond got to a second read. He knows where he is going with the ball before the snap and doesn't change. Many of the passes were quick-reads so there wasn't time to go to the 2nd read, but this is a high-school offense that Alabama will pick apart.
  4. Mond was fairly accurate, but most INC's were his inaccurate passes. Receivers didn't do a terrible job and could have snagged 3 or 4 of the 11 INCs, but most were on Mond. Receivers were mostly open on the short hits, which may have been all the defense was giving us (the camera angles didn't offer a lot of wide-views to see other receivers). But the opportunities for longer passes weren't successful. There were 2 completions that were bad passes that made the receivers fall/dive unnecessarily.
  5. Happy feet. If the quick hitters aren't happening, then the happy feet take over. Happy feet means inaccurate balls.
  6. YAC (Yards after catch) were 60% of Mond's passing yards.
  7. Only 6 Receivers targeted (Wydermyer, Chapman, Lane, Smith, Preston, Kam Brown), not counting the endzone cameraman. Moose, Demas, Achane not on the field has obviously raised eyebrows. I think Kam Brown may have been the best receiver.
  8. Mond wasn't pressured much, although we didn't blow the DL off the ball either. The one sack seemed to be a miscommunication. Mond was tucking to run, but Moore was in pass protection. DE showed some pressure, Mond retreated into the other DE.
  9. I'm not addressing the other 2 horrendous fumbles (simple ball security that most HS QBs understand).

We don't have a good QB situation, folks. Maybe it's the scheme. Maybe it's Mond that can't run Jimbo's full scheme, but we're playing offense at the level of a high-school right now, not as one with a D1 University Senior QB. Smart defensive coordinators with better personnel will pick us apart (like Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, LSU, UGA last year). Stack the box because we aren't going deep - bog down the run game, stop the quick-hitters, and it's over. What else do we have?

While there's more chance of Saban stripping naked and streaking on the field during halftime in lieu of the band performance, I think we should pull Mond and try Calzada or King (yes, even for Alabama). Then we'll find out if it's the scheme or the ability of the QB to throw a decent long ball.
