Intro to Texas A&M Hockey + Ags lose Cotton Bowl Exhibition Game to Those Jerks from Austin.

So, after much hemming and hawing, I finally decided to start this column on our most underappreciated team: the Texas A&M Hockey club. While I’ve never played hockey in my life, the Dallas Stars introduced me to this great sport in 2003 and I’ve been hooked ever since. Hockey is a game of speed and physicality you just can’t find anywhere else. While I was at A&M, this was the one team that could consistently beat t.u.

The Aggie hockey team plays in Spirit Ice Center (formerly Arctic Wolf Ice Center, est. 2005) in College Station. They’re members of the South division of the Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference with Dallas Baptist, TCU, UNT, East Texas Baptist, UTEP, Texas State, and texas. They’re also Division 2 members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s West region; this is significant because the winner of the TCHC tournament goes to the ACHA tournament to play for a national championship.

The Aggies are currently 11-3-0-0-0 (W-L-T-OTL-Shoot Out Loss) in the conference, 14-4-0-0-0 ACHA, and sit on top of the South division at 4-2-0-0-0. UTEP is in second at 10-0-0-0-0 (6-0-0-0-0), but we’re on top with more overall conference wins. The way the playoffs work is still a mystery to me; I’ll have it figured out once the regular season ends and the schedule is released. The important thing to know about last year is the Aggies made it to the finals before losing to UTEP 8-1.

The hot story going into this weekend was that the Ags would be playing texas in the Cotton Bowl using the rink the Dallas Stars had used for this year’s NHL Winter Classic. At the time of writing, the game has ended and t.u. walked away with a 4-1 win. This wasn’t an official conference game, but it always sucks to lose to those guys. We already have the season lead on them 2-1 (2-0 as far as the conference in concerned) and we’ll play them 2 more times to wrap up the regular season. I’d provide some analysis, but all I have is the team’s Twitter feed.

Next up, the Ags travel to El Paso to take on the Miners on Monday and Tuesday. UTEP already has a 2-0 advantage on us for the season, beating us twice at home 2-1 and 3-2 in early October. I’m not gonna lie, I don’t see these ones going well for us. The Miners are 10-0-0-0-0 in conference play and 15-1-0-0-0 in the ACHA. This team is damn good and they could very well win the conference all over again. After that, we go to the state of Kentucky to play UK once and Louisville twice over Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for some out-of-conference action. I’ll be back with you either Sunday or Monday with updates on those, and hopefully I'll have enough stats to give some analysis.

Until then, you can follow the team’s main home page at www.tamuicehockey.com and follow them on Twitter @tamuicehockey.

BTHO UTEP.
