Jashaun Corbin joins growing list of Aggies in transfer portal

Of all the transfers, didn’t see this one coming

National Signing Day is only one day away, and as is the new norm, that has also meant a number of current players announcing their intentions to transfer. It’s inevitable that as the process for transferring gets easier and easier, players are more open to leaving for greener pastures (aka more playing time). That said, yesterdays’ announcement that Texas A&M Aggies running back Jashaun Corbin has entered the transfer portal seemed to catch everyone by surprise.

Corbin was A&M’s bellcow running back heading into the season, and we heard head coach Jimbo Fisher rave about him throughout fall camp. Unfortunately his season was dereailed by a hamstring injury in the second game of the year against Clemson. The injury required surgery and ruled him out for the year. After a few games where carries were split between freshman Isaiah Spiller and sophomore Jacob Kibodi, Spiller eventually earned the job, finishing the season with 869 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns. A&M’s running back position has been ravaged by transfers, losing Corbin and Kidobi (who announced his intentions during the season) as well as Charles Strong and Deneric Prince. Vernon Jackson also suffered a career-ending injury in the spring. It appears the only scholarship running backs currently on the roster are Spiller and Cordarrian Richardson.

A&M was already looking to address the running back position in the 2020 class, but that need just became even more dire. They have a commitment from four-star Fort Bend Hightower running back Devon Achane as well as three-star running back Deondre Jackson out of Georgia. They are in the mix for several other backs, and adding one more is likely a priority. The current tea leaves lean toward Dallas Jesuit’s E.J. Smith.

It’s been a weird year to watch the turnover of the A&M roster. With only five seniors, we all knew there would be a lot of movement if the Aggies planned on signing a 25-man incoming class (which they have indicated is the plan). Almost every player on this list was buried on the depth chart, with players their age or younger playing ahead of them. Including the running backs listed above, these are players who have left the A&M program since the conclusion of the 2018 season:
