POST GAME THOUGHTS: TEXAS A&M BEATS NORTHWESTERN STATE 59-7

Not a bad start to the year.

The Jimbo Fisher era begins with a huge win over an overmatched opponent. Before you say “IT’S ONLY NORTHWESTERN STATE WAAH”, there is peace of mind in doing what you’re supposed to do against a team that you’re better than. I don’t want to pay too much attention what happened last year but if you’re a believer in the transitive property, think about it this way. We struggled to beat Nicholls St. last year. Nicholls St. struggled to beat Northwestern State last year. We blew out Northwestern State this year ergo we are better than last year. I don’t know man. I’m tired. Let’s break this down with a few quick thoughts:

TRILLVEON TRILLIAMS

This is his team. 20 carries for 240 yards. I dont care what team you’re playing against, 12 yards a carry is pretty damn good. RB depth behind him was promising as well, with Etwi, Corbin, and Jackson (fumble aside) adding good yardage, but man. Trayveon just has a different gear to him.

KELLEN

I keep hearing how the QB competition is still open, and I just don’t buy it. This is a different Kellen than the one we saw last year. 17/25 for 184 yards with 2 TDs and no turnovers. He ran the offense with efficiency, made a ton of great passes, and generally looked like a totally different player than he was last year. Take last year out of the equation and I don’t know that we’d be talking about this being a QB competition at all. It’s my opinion that Kellen is your undisputed starter moving forward.

JACE STERNBERGER

5 Catches for 56 yards. That’s pretty dang good. We heard from Tim Brewster in the pulse that the TE was going to play a big part of the offense, and we saw that tonight. There’s some magic going on between Mond and Sternberger.

GENERAL LACK OF SLOP

I only saw one turnover. Didn’t see many penalties. For the first game of a new regime, this was pretty damn impressive. We were crisp. We were disciplined. Players knew their assignments and played their part. Good clean game from a team that looks really well coached.

DEFENSIVE LINE

I really enjoyed watching our defensive line play tonight. They were flying to the ball and seemed pretty dang active, which is encouraging moving forward giving the talent we have.

TARGETING

Everything is targeting. Nothing is targeting. Eat at Arby’s.

CORNERBACKS

Still an issue and one that’s going to cause us some serious issues next week and the weeks moving forward. Some good plays but lots of bad plays. We need to get better in this area quick.

FINAL THOUGHTS

We held them to 251 yards. We racked up 758. Good solid game by both our defense and our offense. I’ve said this already but man....this was a pretty solid showing for the first game (new offensive and defensive schemes) of a new regime. Color me intrigued about what Jimbo can do moving forward.
