Merritt, originally a member of the Class of 2015 recruiting class from Destrehan, Louisiana, had A&M as one of his top schools out of high school. He was a four-star recruit, ranked as one of the top five all-purpose backs in the country. He had five receptions for 61 yards in five games for Oregon last season, and was also active on special teams, but indicated that he wanted to play closer to home.

Merritt will sit out the 2016 season and have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2017.
