What a game. I don’t even know where to begin with this one. This feels like the exact kind of game that we would have lost in the past...Auburn 2013 comes to mind. But some how despite doing our darnedest to give the game away late, we came out with the W and are undefeated on the year. Here are some quick thoughts:
1) THE VOLS
Have to start off by giving credit to the Vol squad. They turned the ball over 7 times and yet were in position to win the game on multiple occasions. Their offense put up 684 yards on John Chavis’s defense. Despite missing Jalen Hurd, their rushing attack ate us up and Josh Dobbs was able to carve up our secondary to the tune of 480+ yards. The ZombieVols did their best to win this one on multiple occasions (I about cried when they punched it into the endzone) but it just wasn’t meant to be.
2) THE DEFENSE
I mean it’s hard to say that it wasn’t our night when a magnificent interception by Armani Watts ended the game, but the defense struggled tonight....but they did just enough to get the job done. You never want to see a team give up 680 yards, but the defense was opportunistic and did what they need to do, despite Myles Garrett being hobbled most of the game.
3) THE OFFENSE
Feels like we had more than a few big plays but we never really got into rhythm despite putting up 592 yards. But man this team has some athletes. Trayveon Wiliams rushed for 217 (and would have closed the game out if not for that pesky fumble) yards and Trevor Knight added an additional 110. Again, never quite clicked into a rhythm but got the job done.
4) TREVOR
Trevor is the QB this team needs. He’s not perfect by any stroke of the imagination, but man when it counts he comes up clutch. The throw to Kirk in OT wasn’t perfect, but it got the job done. Same with the long QB keeper. He’s not perfect, but dammit he’s ours and I wouldn’t trade him for the world.
5) BYE WEEK
Could not be coming at a better time. This team needs to heal. Myles is banged up. I’d imagine that we’re gonna come out of this game with a bunch of limping players. We need this week to get our minds right before Bama.
6) 6-0
Say it with me. We’re 6-0. Say it again. 6-0. 6-0. 6-0. For the past two years that 6th game has been bad to us, but this year we are 6-0. This feels like we overcame a significant mental hurdle to set us up for the rest of the year. SIX AND OH. Man it feels good.
OVERALL
Hoooooooo boy what a night. The dang game started at 2:30 and 5 hours later here we are. Fantastic night for the Aggies (in front of a bunch of star recruits). Hard fought win. This team has something to it. I don’t quite know what it is...but this team has an “it” factor...and the best part is that we have YET to play our best football game. That should excite you for the rest of the year.
Time to heal up and then BTHO alabama.
