The Aggies' backfield in 2013 is LOADED. In fact, I would put our boys up against any unit in the country. The most underrated Aggie of all time, Ben Malena is back for his senior campaign to go along with super-sophomore Trey Williams. Add transfers Brandon Williams and Tra Carson, and you've got everything you could need at the position for this season.
After taking one tailback in 2013 with four-star James White from Pearland Dawson, that would give the Ags four scholarship backs headed into the 2014 season (assuming neither of the transfers declare early for the NFL draft). Add to that the current commitment of Lake Travis Shaun Nixon to this class and it would seem the Aggies could be done at the position, even with a few outstanding offers on the table.
Commit:
Shaun Nixon
The 15-4A 1st Team All-District selection committed to Coach Sumlin back in November. Nixon is a consensus four-star back, who fits perfectly into a spread offense. He is very quick with great balance which makes him a difficult target in space. When someone does put a hit on him, he's powerful enough to fight through a one man tackle. He is also a very good receiver out of the backfield, as evident by his almost 800 yards receiving in his high school career.
Offers:
Leonard Fournette
Joe Mixon
The Aggies also have outstanding offers to Leonard Fournette, the #1 player in the country from New Orleans, and top-50 national prospect, Joe Mixon out of Oakley, California. Both are immediate impact players who the Ags would take in a heartbeat. However, the Ags are not legitimate candidates for either prospect at this time.
Kevin Shorter
An offer has also been extended the Newton athlete who ran for just over 1,800 yards last year. Shorter is classified as an athlete however, because he could also play DB in college. The Aggies are thought to be in Shorter's top three along with Arkansas and LSU. If he does end up choosing an SEC-West rival, it would not be a shock to see the Aggie staff use that scholarship at another position.
In-State Guy I Like:
Justin Stockton
The Cibolo Steele speedster's film has disappeared off the internet it seems after he committed to Texas Tech. Kliff Kingsbury hired his former high school coach Mike Jinks as Tech's Running Back coach and received a verbal commitment from Shorter not long after. Stockton is a smaller, explosive back that might not hold up well in the SEC. However, He's a great fit in Kingsbury's system in my opinion and I look for him to do big things in the Big 12.
