Maroon & White Spring Game | Open Thread

It's only 140 more days until the season. Embrace today the way you'd embrace the last beer on earth.

IMPORTANT: OrionHjarvis has you covered on all the coveted recruits in College Station today. News is going to be fluid throughout the day, so be sure to check in here for your recruiting fix.

My how things can change in a year. In the 2012 Spring Game, we were getting accustomed to Kevin Sumlin and his style. The quarterback position was totally up in the air, yet most would have told you Jameill Showers was a lock for the gig. The defense was riddled with all kinds of unknowns. Basically, everything was new, raw, and scary.

Today, the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback will take the field with his teammates televised nationally on the World Wide Leader. Here is what I'll be watching:

Johnny's progression as a passer. I imagine the staff will mandate Johnny to sit in the pocket as if he has Landry Jones' legs to make him work on traditional footwork and passing progression.

Speaking of quarterbacks, who is going to be the backup? There will be plenty of reps to go around, and I'm interested in seeing who steps up. Will Sumlin and company throw the backups into series with the first teamers?

New running backs Tra Carson and Brandon Williams. It's an embarrassment of gold, frankincense and myrrh in the A&M backfield, and transfers Carson and Williams finally get a stage to perform on. Williams brings the quicks and Carson brings the beef to a corps that already features Ben Malena and Trey Williams. Kind of nice to have the best set of backs in the league when the bulk of your offense is predicated on spreading it out and letting Johnny do his YOLO IDK shit.

Bodies in the front seven. Help is on the way as evidenced by Sumlin's recruiting in these areas, but depth and reliability don't just manifest themselves in the trenches over night. Starting jobs are on the table, and guys will be depended on to step up.

Other things I want to see:

  • Sumlin coaches from the Swaggercopter just a mere 30 feet above the action.
  • Jay-Z and Beyonce perform at halftime with the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band because why the hell not?
It should be a fun day. The Ags are playing on the mother ship station that owns the niche, comically sparse Longhorn Network. You're Aggies, so I know you don't know how to do this, but try to stay calm and reasonable. It's a spring game. Overreacting in either way will just exhaust you. Kick back, enjoy, and drink with us in the comments.
