Why Winning the Chick-Fil-A Bowl Matters

Do we get free chicken nuggets if we hit the over?

Kevin C. Cox

The Chick-Fil-A Bowl against Duke. Yeah, I admit, it's still difficult for me to get too excited about this game. In an effort to get myself a little amped up while we wait another two weeks for the game to actually be played, I decided to take a look at the bowl game and some of the results from it.

Here are the results of teams coming off the Chick-Fil-A Bowl since 1993 when it started as an SEC vs. ACC matchup:

Year

Winner Next Season Result
2012 Clemson 10-2 BCS Game
2011 Auburn 3-9
2010 Florida State 9-4
2009 Virginia Tech 11-3 BCS Game
2008 LSU 9-4
2007 Auburn 5-7
2006 Georgia 11-2 BCS Game
2005 LSU 11-2 BCS Game
2004 Miami 9-3
2003 Clemson 9-4
2002 Maryland 10-3
2001 North Carolina 3-9
2000 LSU 10-3 BCS Game
1999 Mississippi State 8-4
1998 Georiga 8-4
1997 Auburn 3-8
1996 LSU 9-3
1995 Virginia 7-5
1994 North Carolina State 3-8
1993 Clemson 5-6

1. For all the sauce packets!

After 20 matchups since this bowl became an official ACC vs. SEC bragging rights showdown, the results are knotted at 10-10. Starting with the LSU win in 1996, the conferences alternated winning streaks of five and then fo...okay so there's that Auburn win stuck in there in 2011, but let's ignore that (won't be the last time in this article). Clemson's win last season would have been 4 in a row for the ACC, so it's most definitely time for the SEC to start another winning streak. No pressure, Ags. It's all on us to take the lead in this one and not have to endure an entire year of blah blah blah nobody cares about the ACC.

2. Chick-Fil-Omen?

Of the last 20 winners of the Chick-Fil-A/Peach Bowl, only 6 teams did not go bowling the following season. Yeah, Auburn, thanks for accounting for three of those. If the Aggies are able to get the win over Duke, they have a 70% shot at going bowling the next season. Or a 30% of not going to a bowl, ensuring Waffle House never comes back to College Station, Baylor becomes the most popular team in the state, and Coach Sumlin goes to the NFL. Stats, bro.

3. Chicken Sandwich to Sugar Packets?

The last 10 winners of the bowl game from the SEC have gone on to see pretty nice seasons after winning in Atlanta. Of course, not Auburn, who has never had a winning season after winning the Chick-Fil-A/Peach bowl since the ACC vs. SEC setup. So let's just go ahead and remove Auburn from the equation, because science. That leave us with 7 teams that had winning seasons the next year. Of those 7, 3 went on to play in a BCS game the following season. The average win-loss record of those seven teams following the Chick-Fil-A bowl is 9.4-3.1. Hooray to 9.4 wins next season!

4. Really, Auburn?

Auburn bros. Why is it that you hate succulent chicken sandwiches so much? It better not be the waffle fries. Tell me it's not the waffle fries.

5. One More Year

It's only obvious that after they get the win and learn of these reasons why winning this bowl game matters Johnny, Mike, Cedric, Malcome, and Jarvis will all come back to take the Aggies to a BCS game next season.

So what does this tell us? Well, outside of beat Duke on New Year's Eve and you statistically have a good shot at having a good season in 2014...nothing, really.
