Opponent First Look: South Carolina State

Presswire

On Saturday the South Carolina State Bulldogs travel to Kyle Field. Anybody have any idea who in the hell these guys are? Bueller... Bueller...

Founded: March 4, 1896
Location: Orangeburg, South Carolina
Students: 5,000
Head Coach: Oliver Pough
Mascot: Bulldogs

South Carolina State is a charter member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) which was formed in 1970 and is comprised of historically black colleges and universities. The Bulldogs have won four Black college football national championships with their most recent in 2009.

The 2012 Bulldogs(1-2) are led offensively by dual threat quarterback Richard Cue who also leads the team in rushing. Cue averages almost 153 yards/game through the air and 43 yards/game on the ground. He has three passing touchdowns with five picks through three games. Receiver Caleb Davis is their second most productive player with 155 yards on the season but he has yet to find the endzone.

Defensively, they are not any better. In their last game, the Arizona Wildcats, under new coach Rich Rodriguez, put up 689 total yards in a 56-0 rout of the Bulldogs. In all three ballgames, the defense has given up at least 27 points and two of the opponents were fellow FCS schools.

On paper, this should be a great tune-up before the Arkansas Razorbacks come to town next week. Starters and their backups should get significant reps on tape to critique during the following week of practice. Let's just hope we come out of the game healthy and focused.
