Liberty Bowl/Memphis Recommendations

As December encloses around us and we light our menorahs, kwanza candles and christmas trees... some of you may be planning a trip to Memphis for the great Liberty Bowl. I wanted to drop some suggestions and also point people to this when the time comes that i see things on the 'book and want to comment... however, Memphis is a diverse town, so I wanted to frame it like aTiger Beat style quiz...(if you answered mostly C's Marc from Home Improvement is your celebrity crush). So here is your quiz and results are below.

1. I am going to the game with...

A. People I met on twitter.

B. My family including the childs.

C. My partner/spouse.

2. When someone mentions artisan craft meats and beer, I....

A. Get the meat sweats

B. I dont eat meat or drink beer because I am vegan/pregnant/gluten free.

C. Look em up on weight watchers, then rationalize the consumption of them by planning a lot of exercising.

3. I am staying at _____ in Memphis.

A. Someones apartment/house via Airbnb

B. The Peabody

C. Using my points and staying at the Hilton.

4. I like to party at a ___ out of 10.

A. 10, I just graduated 2 years ago, hangovers are for old people.

B. 2, I have drank two glasses of wine once and get a little spinny then awoke at 4 AM to a crying infant/toddler.

C. 5-7, I used to party at a 10, and have done so recently and instantly regretted it. I was bed bound for weeks.

If you answered mostly A's:

To stay: Midtown (near the universities of Memphis or Rhodes) or very close to downtown. If you dont want to drive, downtown is where all the boozing is. Downtown hotels can range in price, but DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT STAY BY THE LIBERTY BOWL. Its scary, my man-partner lived over there and it was yikes.

To eat: Local Foods (good bloodies, two locations), YOLO (ice cream not the Drake song), Central BBQ (my personal favorite is getting pulled pork nachos with cole slaw on them), Gus's Fried Chicken (fried chicken and 40s), Memphis Pizza Cafe, Young Avenue Deli, DKDC

To libate: RAIFORDS DISCO IS WHERE DREAMS GO TO BECOME BETTER DREAMS. It is owned by a gay pimp and has a light up dance floor. If that doesnt sound appealing, you did not answer this quiz correctly. Beale street is ok, I would recommend Silkys. Other bars: Molly Fontaines (bar in a house), Local (see food recs), Earnstine and Hazels (their burgers are great).

To see: Sun City Records, Walk the river in downtown, The Madison Hotel for a nice view of the city

If you answered mostly Bs:

To stay: The Peabody, The Madison Hotel, or anything in downtown. That is probably the safest part of Memphis and about 10 minutes from the Liberty Bowl.

To eat: Local Foods, YOLO, Young Avenue Deli, Boscos, Central BBQ,Germantown Commissary (so good, best ribs and Banana Puddin!), South on Beale, Trolley Stop, The Arcade for Breakfast --these are all family friendly, and incredible food.

To libate: If you are to get a drink at two places, here they are: Ernestine and Hazels (not wildly kid friendly) and Local. If you wanna drink local: Ghost River is the brewery

To see: Memphis Zoo, The Pink Palace, The Botanical Gardens, The Gibson Factory, Take the trolly, Go to Mud Island, etc etc.

If you answered mostly Cs:

To stay: All of the above are great suggestions. Basically, Memphis is not safe. Be aware of where you are staying and the prices of things reflect that.

To eat: See above. Also for a price jump: Hog and Hominy (pizza is so good) & Flight (fancy)...BarDog (hotdog of the day), SliderInn (sliders), The Elegant Farmer (dope brunch)

To libate: See above, I would add Alex's Tavern (DIVE DIVE DIVE BAR BYOB BEST JUKEBOX) and also add emphasis to Ernestine &Hazels, ask to see the upstairs.

To see: Sun City, Gibson Guitars, The Civil Rights Museum--just incredible.

In closing, just a thing on safety. When taking cabs NEVER take a gypsy cab. Always order from a reputable source (Uber/YCC). Be aware of your surroundings. Around the airport is scary, as is getting from the Liberty Bowl to and from downtown. Sometimes Beale gets roudy and there are metal detectors, so just be mindful. Also, my favorite bbq is Germantown Commissary then Central BBQ. All others are fine, these are the best. Even the Memphis version of Rudy's...Corkys!
