Let's move on

I was leaving a long comment on Cuppy's latest post about Chip Brown when I decided that my thoughts would be better expressed in my own post.

So here's the thing Ags. We're almost a full 3 seasons into the A&M/SEC era, and we're still completely obsessed with t.u. And it's not just GBH. Aggies everywhere are still holding onto this tired old rivalry so desperately that it's become forced and unsatisfying. We're like the ex who tried for years to get out of an abusive relationship, but once it finally happened is obsessed with knowing everything about that person. "Who are they dating? Did they mention me? Do they seem unhappy?" WHO CARES! It's over... For years t.u. made fools of us by downplaying the rivalry while we formed an entire identity around it. They've called OU their real conference rival for like 10 years now. In fact it wasn't until we joined the SEC that they started talking, tweeting and writing about us like they do now.

The 2012 college football season was a special time in every Aggie's life. But for this Aggie, it was pure bliss. Not only was it my final semester at A&M (yes I did a victory lap and boy did it pay off), and not only was our entrance into the SEC better than anyone could have ever imagined, but it was extra special because for the first time since the hay day of the wrecking crew, we were heads and tails better than t.u. AND we didn't even have to play them for the whole world to know it. We had finally stepped out of their shadow, and in doing so we realized that our own potential was limitless. You think it's a coincidence how much they talk about us now? You think that the t.u. message boards went this crazy during Aggie games in 2009? No. They didn't give a crap because why should they? We were not a threat. We were irrelevant. Now we are the biggest threat they've ever faced. They're losing every battle. Recruiting, ratings, even college applicants And despite our rise to fame, despite the fact that we won, the battle is over, and they'll never be the same Texas they were in their prime. We still seem like the little brother at times. We still like to peek around the corner to see what's going on in Austin. See if big brother is saying mean things about us or posting false reports on twitter.

The truth is that we'll never really fit in with our new SEC family until we let go of Big 12 rivalries and find an SEC one. Many people, myself included, believe that LSU is our natural rival now. Here are a few reasons why.

  1. They are closest to us geographically. And a Texas/Louisiana rivalry already exists
  2. They lack an instate rival, and a true divisional rival.
  3. They have a very hateable fan base, but at their core are not so unlike us.
  4. For the love of God we play them on Thanksgiving!

So I guess after all that, my point is this... t.u. lost. We won. We are better and far more respected, and far more swagtastic from now until forever. We're not in the big 12 anymore, and we're done being anyone's little brother. Let's all show a little self respect and STFU about t.u. And at the same time, let's accept our natural rivalry with Da Tigahs and fully embrace our SEC lifestyle.

Thanks and Gig Em
