Texas High School Football Playoffs - CHAMPIONSHIP edition

Championship weekend is finally here!

This weekend, the surviving 20 teams from Texas high school football conferences 1A-5A will gather in the homely, warm, understated and not at all pretentious AT&T Stadium (otherwise known as the Deathstar) to decide who gets to take home the most prestigious and trapezoidal state championship trophy in the modern era of high school athletics.

(LOOK AT ALL THOSE FANS IN THIS INTIMATE SETTING!)

The past month or so, I've been updating the four of you who read my posts on the games in the 4A and 5A conference playoffs and keeping tabs on the handful of Aggie recruits whose teams are still in the hunt. This week, I'll expand the scope a bit to include the 3A, 2A and 1A conference championship match-ups. Enjoy!

(Links to Aggie recruits' highlights are in my post on Round 1.)

If you are lucky enough to be in the Metroplex this weekend, here's a run-down on the games you could see live (or larger than "live" on the Jerry-tron).

5A Division 1

Last weekend, Pearland defeated San Antonio Madison 38-34 (boxscore). Madison had scored a TD with less than two minutes to go in the game to take a 34-31 lead, but Pearland senior Jacoby Lewis took the ensuing kickoff back 97 yards for the winning score. In the other semifinal game, Allen and Aggie target Kyler Murray (2015 QB) also won in dramatic fashion; defeating DeSoto 42-35 in a come-from-behind win (boxscore). Allen scored 22 points in the 4th quarter and was led by Murray who went OFF - 11 for 27 passing for 228 yards and 2 TDs including a 68 yard bomb to Jalen Guyton in the 4th and 159 yards rushing including a 24 yard TD run for the winning score with 11 seconds left in the game. Pearland and Allen will play on 12/21 at 4:00 pm (all games this weekend are at AT&T Stadium in Arlington).

5A Division 2

Cedar Hill defeated Lake Travis and Aggie commit Varshaun Nixon (2014 RB) 19-10 last weekend - ruining my prediction of a championship game featuring two future Aggie running backs. (boxscore) Nixon did play well though, rushing for 61 yards and a TD on 23 carries and catching 8 passes for 74 yards. In the other semifinal game, Katy and Aggie commit Rodney Anderson (2014 RB) continued to dominate their foes, beating San Antonio Johnson by a score of 52-0 (boxscore). Anderson had another good game, rushing for 225 yards and two TDs on 17 carries. Katy will face Cedar Hill on 12/21 at 8:00 pm.

4A Division 1

Denton Guyer defeated Highland Park 22-16 with a late 4th quarter TD run. Guyer scored all 22 of their points in the 4th quarter to advance (boxscore). San Antonio Brennan defeated Houston Stratford 31-7 (boxscore) in the other semifinal game. These two teams will play 12/20 at 8:00 pm.

4A Division 2

Aledo continued their post-season run by defeating Ennis 22-6 (boxscore). Their 16 point margin of victory was BY-FAR their closest contest of the playoffs, having previously won by 70, 61, 40 and 55 points. On the season, Aledo has scored 925 points - a 11-man football record. Aledo will look to finish their season with a win over Brenham. The cubs defeated Calhoun 56-21 in their semifinal game (boxscore). (Side note - Calhoun is out of Port Lavaca and 1000 internet points to anyone who can name their mascot without looking it up in the comments.) Brenham and Aledo will face off on 12/21 at high noon.

3A Division 1

The championship game here will feature Kilgore versus Carthage on 12/20 at 12:00 noon. Kilgore defeated perenial power Stephenville 44-6 in their semifinal while Carthage beat La Grange 55-21. Carthage also knocked off the defending state champ Navasota in the second round.

3A Division 2

Argyle versus Fairfield on 12/20 at 4:00 pm. Argyle defeated Graham 38-14 last weekend while Fairfield handled Sinton 56-13. As far as I know, the Eagles' uniforms do NOT feature an argyle pattern, but they do play some good football. In fact, I couldn't even find any good pictures of ANY TEAM in argyle uniforms in my two minute internet scouring.

2A Division 1

Wall versus Cameron Yoe tonight at 5:00 pm! Wall beat New Boston (which is in Texas, NOT Massachusetts) 31-3 while Yoe squeaked by White Oak 24-21 in the semifinals. The Yoemen have OYE on their helmets, but don't be confused - a yoeman is the English equivalent of an Aggie and they even wear maroon and white!

2A Division 2

Cisco and Refugio play tonight at 8:00 pm in their championship game. Cisco defeated Leonard 55-6 while Refugio beat Waskom 69-33 in the semifinals. The Lobo-Es will battle the Bobcats for animal football supremacy, but Cisco is playing from behind after already losing the animal name spelling bee earlier this week.

1A Division 1

Stamford and Shiner (a GBH fan favorite) will face off today at 10:00 am (IN THE MORNING). Stamford beat Hico 34-26 and Shiner beat Mart 49-22 in the semifinals. Stamford will try to down Shiner in this ill-advised early-morning show-down (much like many of our readers who have already finished their college finals for the semester).

1A Division 2

Wellington and Falls City will face off today at 1:00 pm. Both of these teams are undefeated - Wellington beat Albany 46-20 while Falls City didn't fall to Teneha 36-34.

An important warning to any and all fans attending games at AT&T stadium - If you venture down to the field following a game, keep your head on a swivel! The turf is patrolled by drones! These drones are commissioned by Jerry Jones to seek and destroy intruders. Just (semi) recently, a winning coach fell victim to one of these dastardly, mindless minions bent on devious deeds. You've been warned!
