Texas High School Playoffs: Round 3

So in last week's post, I made two big mistakes - I listed Houston Westside WR Frank Iheanacho as a commit when, in fact, he has yet to commit (this is a fairly important part of the recruiting process, I'm told). I also misread my bracket and stated that Myles Garrett had been eliminated from the playoffs when he (and the rest of his team) had actually won their game. My confusion/mistake came from the fact that I read the Arlington High score and attributed it to Garrett's real team Arlington Martin. My apologies to everyone in the the Garrett household and the extended Arlington area - this Houston resident meant no disrespect!

With the Thanksgiving holiday causing many school districts to not hold classes at all this week (lucky ones) and others only attending on Monday and Tuesday (me), I thought I would try to get this out a bit earlier. Make plans now to attend/view the trifecta of football fandom - high school playoffs, college and NFL games.

On to this past weekend's (hopefully mistake-free) results :

5A division 1 (monster schools)

Arlington MARTIN (Myles Garrett's real school) and Aggie commit Myles Garrett (who does not attend Arlington High) (2014 DE) defeated/dismantled Odessa 52-2 (boxscore). Garrett returned a fumble 22 yards for a defensive touchdown and the rest of his unit held Odessa to 146 yards of offense. It is note-worthy that Odessa did score two straight unanswered points in the 4th quarter in this one. Arlington MARTIN will face DeSoto on 11/29 at 7:30 pm at Midlothian ISD Stadium.

Dallas Skyline and Aggie commit Cedric Collins (2014 CB) defeated Sachese 51-10 (boxscore) in their second round game. Skyline had 10 different players record carries which is a feat unto itself. They'll face a very good Spring Westfield team on 11/29 at 2:30 pm at Georgetown ISD Stadium.

Allen High and Aggie target Kyler Murray (2015 QB) continued to roll, beating Horn 42-14 (boxscore). Murray had 4 touchdowns and 225 yards on 7-14 passing. He also added 10 carries for 35 yards in the win. Allen will face THE Woodlands High School on 11/30 at 2:00 pm at Floyd Casey Stadium (Kyle Field North) in Waco.

Other notable scores - The Woodlands finishes a wild 4th quarter to beat Round Rock 24-23, Southlake Carroll blows out Midland Lee 51-7 and Galena Park Northshore has put up over 100 points in two playoff games as they defeat Fort Bend Hightower 61-0.

5A division 2 (smaller monster schools)

Lake Travis and Aggie commit Varshaun Nixon (2014 RB) defeated Atascocita 41-16 (boxscore). Nixon ran well; racking up 120 yards on 26 carries, but it was the passing attack that scored the points in the end. LT will face Dallas Jesuit on 11/30 time TBA at Waco ISD Stadium.

Katy High and Aggie commit Rodney Anderson (2015 RB) defeated Cypress-Woods 51-7 (boxscore). Anderson also ran well (under-statement of the year), amassing 236 yards on 25 carries for 4 touchdowns. He also took a punt back 62 yards for another score. The Tigers have scored 121 points in their first two playoff games and will face a better challenge this weekend in Fort Bend Elkins on 11/29 at 1:00 pm at Tully Stadium in Houston.

Manvel High School and Aggie commit Koda Martin (2014 OT) won a shoot-out with Fort Bend Bush 51-44 (boxscore) in their second round game. The two teams combined for just under 1100 yards of offense in the contest and Manvel scored the go-ahead touchdown with only six seconds left in the 4th quarter. Manvel and Martin face Spring Branch Memorial on 11/30 at 1:00 pm at Mercer Stadium in Sugarland.

Other scores of note include my dad's alma mater A&M Consolidated beating Austin Westlake 41-16 and Alexander beating Rivera like a drum 56-0.

4A division 1 (big big schools)

Georgetown defeated Nederland and Aggie commit DeShawn Washington (2014 DT) 33-7 (boxscore). Georgetown dominated this game from the opening whistle and Nederland didn't help their cause with two lost fumbles and three thrown interceptions.

Other notable scores - Highland Park blows out Kimball 58-21 and will face a good match-up against Mansfield Legacy who dismantled McKinney North 70-49 in a game that features two offenses and no defenses. Magnolia West continued their surprise run by beating 33-26 (West is coached by former Baylor QB Shawn Bell.)

4A division 2 (smaller big schools)

Whitehouse and Aggie commit Justin Dunning (2015 S) defeated Sulphur Springs 38-14 (boxscore). Whitehouse rushed for 343 yards in adverse weather conditions. They will face Mesquite Poteet on 11/29 at 1:00 pm at Eagle Stadium in Allen.

Other scores include Aledo blowing out Boswell 75-14, Brenham holding off Dayton 31-30, Calallen sending Alice straight to the moon 42-0 and the Tivy Fightin' Manziels losing to Cedar Park 43-21.
